Biosafety

Containment principles, technologies and

practices that are implemented to prevent
unintentional exposure to biological agents
or their accidental release.

Biosafety: Safety of the individual

Bio security
 Principles, technologies and practices that are
implemented for the protection, control and
accountability of biological materials and/or the
equipment, skills and data related to their
handling.
 Biosecurity aims to prevent their unauthorized
access, loss, theft, misuse, diversion or release.

Biosecurity: Security of the agent

Hazard and Risk

Hazard: An object or situation that has the potential to cause harm.

Risk: the likelihood of an incident and the severity of the harm
(consequences) if that incident were to occur
Incident: An occurrence that has the potential to,
or results in, the exposure of laboratory
personnel to biological agents and/or their
release into the environment that may or may
not lead to actual infection.

Accident: An unintentional occurrence that results

in actual harm such as infection, illness, injury
or contamination of the environment.
Biosafety officer:
 An individual designated to oversee facility organizational
biosafety (and possibly biosecurity) programmes.
 (biosafety advisor, biosafety manager, biosafety coordinator,
or biorisk management advisor.

Biosafety committee:
 An institutional committee created to act as an independent
review group for biosafety issues, reporting to senior
management.
 The membership of the biosafety committee should reflect
the different occupational areas of the organization as well as its
scientific expertise.
Hand Washing
Touch is one of the most important human
sense out of 5 human senses. However , this
vital sense can carry potential risks.
80 percent of the common diseases are
transmitted by touch.
Globally 2.8 m children below the age of 5
years die each year from pneumonia and
diarrheal diseases.
Hand Washing
Handwashing with soap is among the most
cost-effective ways to improve health and
prevent diseases.
For instance, 47% of diarrheal diseases are
preventable through handwashing.
As the saying goes, hand washing with soap is
“do it yourself” vaccine.
Hand Washing
In Pakistan, 50 million people do not wash
their hands after changing babies diapers
20 million people do not wash their hands
with soap and clean water after using toilet
 As Sir William Osler said, “The person who
takes medicine must recover twice, once
from the disease and once from the
medicine”.
