Pluralistic Society
A pluralistic society is a diverse one, where the
people in it believe all kinds of different things and
tolerate each other's beliefs even when they don't
match their own.

In a pluralistic society, there is a celebration of being

different.
Pai and Adler (1997) noted that advocates for
pluralism believe that multicultural education is
appropriate for a democratic society because:
"participatory democracy is fundamentally pluralistic .
. . it entails the acceptance of the intrinsic worth of all
human beings and their unique individuality" (p.
104).
MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION

Multicultural education relates to

education and instruction designed
for the cultures of several different
races in an educational system. This
approach to teaching and learning
is based upon consensus building,
respect, and fostering cultural
pluralism within racial societies.
MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION

Multicultural education is a field of

study and an emerging discipline whose
major aim is to create equal educational
opportunities for students from diverse
racial, ethnic, social class, and cultural
groups.
MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION

One of its important goals is to help

all students to acquire the knowledge,
attitudes, and skills needed to function
effectively in a pluralistic democratic
society and to interact, negotiate, and
communicate with peoples from diverse
groups in order to create a civic and
moral community that works for the
common good."

MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION
1. Learning Environment
A multicultural classroom is
one in which both the students
and the teacher are accepting of
all races, cultures, and religions.
This acceptance is evidenced by
the books that are read, the
activities that are completed, and
the lessons that are taught
MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION
2. Curriculum

Educational policies, materials

and lessons which are unfair to
the culture of the learners should
be modified to suit the goals of
multicultural education.
James Banks (1999,p.31)
identifies four levels of
practice, which are
distinguished by the degree
of integration of
multicultural content and
processes and the ultimate
aims of the approach:
Four Levels of Practice
1. The Contributions Approach
This approach reflects the least amount of involvement in
multicultural education approaches. This is incorporated by
selecting books and activities that celebrate holidays,
heroes, and special events from various cultures.
Four Levels of Practice
2.The Additive Approach
In this approach content, concepts, themes, and
perspectives are added to the curriculum without changing
its basic structure. This involves incorporating literature by
and about people from diverse cultures into the mainstream
curriculum without changing the curriculum.
Four Levels of Practice
3. The Transformation Approach
This approach actually changes the structure of the
curriculum and encourages students to view concepts,
issues, themes, and problems from several ethnic
perspectives and points of view.
Four Levels of Practice
4. The Social Action Approach
This approach combines the transformation approach
with activities to strive for social change. Students are not
only instructed to understand and question social issues,
but to also do something important about it.
MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION
3. Teacher

Teachers should be prepared

and trained to handle the class
according to the rules of
multicultural education.
MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION
4. Support

There should be a support

from the authorities and school
administration for the success of
multicultural education.
