Language and culture

It has been seen that language is
much more than the external expression
and communication of internal thoughts
formulated independently of their
verbalization.
……………………………………………..

Anthropologists speak of the relations

between language and culture. It is indeed
more in accordance with reality to consider
language as a part of culture.
…………………………………………….....

Language
a system of conventional spoken, manual (signed), or
written symbols by means of which human beings
express themselves.
...............................................................

Spanish was the official language of the

country for more than three centuries
under Spanish colonial rule.
Tagalog was chosen as the base language on
December 30, 1937, on the basis that it was
the most widely spoken and developed local
language.
……………………………………………..

 In 1939, President Manuel L. Quezó n renamed the

Tagalog language as Wikang Pambansa ("national
language").
 The language was further renamed in 1959 as Pilipino
by Secretary of Education Jose Romero.
 The 1987 Constitution declares Filipino as the
national language of the country.
……………………………………………….

8 major dialects spoken by majority of the Filipinos.

 Tagalog
 Cebuano
 Ilocano
 Hiligaynon or Ilonggo
 Bicolano
 Waray
 Pampango
 Pangasinense
……………………………………………….

Culture

Culture can be defined as all the ways of life

including arts, beliefs and institutions of a population
that are passed down from generation to generation.
……………………………………………..

 The Filipino culture has varied influences from

previous colonizations, deriving mainly from the
culture of Spain and America.

 The Filipino culture and values are just among the

good things that are appreciated by many people
from across the world. In the Philippines, family is
valued so much. Children live with their parents
until they are married. The Filipino family culture
is something that many people applaud because
the locals value family time so much.
………………………………………………

The following are some more important and

fundamental Filipino values:
1. Bayanihan.
2. Before, the Filipino men used to serenade (harana) a
woman he was courting.
3. Filipinos call their older siblings “ate” for older sisters
and “kuya” for older brothers to show respect.
4. Palabra de Honor.
5. Pakikisama.
