What Are the Five Ks?
The Five Ks are a set of symbols that Sikhs wear to show their dedication to
Sikhism and to show they belong to the Khalsa.

They are called the 5 K’s because the
name of each of the symbols
(in Punjabi) begins with the letter K.
The Five Ks?
Kesh means hair.

Sikhs make a promise to not cut their


Kesh hair, but let it grow as a symbol of their
faith.

Uncut Hair Their hair gets very long, so they wear


a turban to keep it tidy.

They believe this demonstrates their


obedience to God.
The Five Ks?
The Kangha is a small wooden comb.
Kangha
Sikhs use this to keep their hair in
place and it is a symbol of cleanliness.

comb Combing their hair reminds Sikhs that


their lives should be clean and ordered
in body and in mind.
The Five Ks?
The Kara is a steel bangle worn on the
Kara arms of Sikhs.

It is a continuous circle with no


beginning and no end.
Bracelet
It reminds Sikhs to behave well, follow
their faith and restrain from doing
wrong.

The Kachera are short trousers worn as
Kachera underwear.

These are more practical than the long


loose clothes most people in India
Cotton Shorts wore at the time of Guru Gobind
Singh.

They are a symbol of modesty


(keeping covered) and purity. They
remind Sikhs to do the right thing.
The Five Ks?
The Kirpan is a warriors sword.
Kirpan
These days a very tiny one is worn as a
symbol of dignity and self respect.

Sword It reminds Sikhs that they must fight a


spiritual battle, defending what is right
and upholding the truth.

The last two symbols are a reminder that Sikhs are warriors and should always fight for
what is right, protecting the weak and needy.
