Plot the given pair of

coordinates in the Cartesian
Plane
Rectangular Coordinate
System
 A system used for graphing
number pairs
 Also called Cartesian Coordinate
System
 Invented by Rene Descartes
Parts of
Rectangular
Coordinate
System
Axes
-the two intersecting lines that
are perpendicular to each other
in the Cartesian Plane
x-axis
It is the horizontal line.

y-axis
It is the vertical line.
Origin
-a point of intersection of and
axes at
Quadrants
-the regions that divide the
plane into four equal parts
Point
-corresponds to an ordered pair
of numbers .
Coordinates of the
Point
-the ordered pairs that represent
a point
Abcissa
(x-coordinate)
-the distance from the point of
origin that is measured along
the x-axis
Ordinate
(y-coordinate)
-the distance from the point of
origin that is measured along
the y-axis.
Plotting Points
on the Cartesian
Coordinate
System
Steps
1. Start first with the origin.
2. Look into the ordered pair given.

First:
If the sign of is positive, the direction of the point moves
along the right(→) side of the x-axis.
If the sign of is negative, the direction of the point moves
along the left(←) side of the x-axis.
Steps
2. Look into the ordered pair given.

Second:
If the sign of is positive, move upwards as many units as
the number requires.
If the sign of is negative, move downwards as many units
as the number requires.
Plot the following
points:
A
1. E J
2. I
3.
4.
H G
5.
6. C B
7. G D

Determining the
Coordinates
Steps
1. Determine the distance of the point from the y-axis. This
is the x-coordinate.

2. Determine the distance of the point from the x-axis. This

is the y-coordinate.

3. Determine the signs of the coordinates

based on the quadrant where the point is
located.
Find the coordinates of the
following points.
1. A (_ ,1_)4
2. B (_ -5, _)3
3. C (_ -2, _)-4
4. D (_ , 4_)-1
5. E (_ , 2_)3
6. F (_ , 0_) 3
7. G (_ ,-4_)-2
8. H (_ ,2_)-3
9. I (_ , -3
_) 0
10.J (_ ,2_)0

Using the 15 ordered pairs as points on a graph, produce a creative
figure when you trace the points. You will be doing this on a graphing
paper. You will need to indicate the list of ordered pairs and its location
(quadrant number or axis) in a tabulated form on a short bond paper.
You must use points in all four quadrants.
