grouped into periods. Each
period is composed of three
digits.

A comma separates
the periods.

• Numbers can be
written in standard
form and in words
• Numbers in expanded
form are expressed as
the sum of the products
of the digits and their
place value.
 To read and write
numbers, we say the
numbers in the
period’s name.

words, we consider the
periods.
The numeral 12,600 has
two periods.

• The digit 1 and 2 are in the


thousands period.
• While the digit 6, 0, and 0 are in the
units period.
But how can we
read and write
numbers?

 The number in
standard form is 12,
600.

“twelve thousand,
six hundred.”

 In expanded form, it is
written as:
12,000 + 600
=(10,000) + (2,000) + (600).
