NUMBER SENSE
Lesson 4
Comparing and
Ordering Number
We compare numbers
by looking at the digits
in their place value
position
Compare 2,465 and 2,956. Study
the place value chart below.
Thousands Units
HTh TTh Th H T O
Mt. Kanlaon
2 4 6 5
2 9 5 6
Mt. Apo
a.Compare the thousands. The digits in
the thousands place are the same.

The digit 4 is smaller than the digit 9.

Therefore, we write:
2,465 < 2,956.
Or we say: 2,465 is
less than 2,956.
Therefore, we write:
2,956 > 2,465.
Or we say: 2,956 is
greater than 2,465.
 When we compare
numbers, we align the
digits starting from the
ones place, then the
tens place, and so on.
 Begin comparing from
the left digit and find
the first place where
the digits are different.
To compare large numbers,
compare according to their
place value from the leftmost;
if they are the same, compare
until the last given digit.
The symbols used in
comparing numbers are:
> “is greater than”
< “is less than”
= “is equal to”
Examples:
1. Compare 24,671 and 33,075.
Thousands Units
HTh TTh Th H T O
2 4 6 7 1
3 3 0 7 5
Examples:
Thousands Units
HTh TTh Th H T O
2 4 6 7 1
3 3 0 7 5
Compare the digits in the ten
thousand place, 2 < 3. Therefore,
24,671 < 33,075
Examples:
2. Compare 467,183 and 467,095.
Thousands Units
HTh TTh Th H T O
4 6 7 1 8 3
4 6 7 0 9 5
Examples:
Thousands Units
HTh TTh Th H T O
4 6 7 1 8 3
4 6 7 0 9 5
The digits in the hundred
thousands(4), Ten thousand(6)
and thousands(7) are the same.
Examples:
Thousands Units
HTh TTh Th H T O
4 6 7 1 8 3
4 6 7 0 9 5
The digits in the hundred place
are different, 1>0. Therefore,
467,183 > 467,095
When the numbers are
written in order, they are
arranged either in
ascending or descending
order.
But what’s the
difference?
ASCENDING
It is arranged from
the least to the
greatest.
DESCENDING

E
It is arranged from
greatest to least.
Ascending Order
5,055 7,092 672 7,920 1,243
Answer:
672 1,243 5,055 7,092 7,920
Descending Order
90,172 8,899 36,891 77,000 101,067

Answer:
101,067 90,172 77,000 36,891 8,899
