(permanent; may be good or bad)

- causes of change: conflict or major

3. Static
- doesn't undergo any change

4. Round
- changes throughout the story
(opposite of they used to be)
- well-developed; has complex
personality

Harry Potter
5. Flat
- one dimensional
- notable for one kind of
personality or
characteristic

Mr. Filch
6. Stock
- easily recognizable by
the readers
- conventional or
stereotypical

Wicked Stepmother
7. Protagonist
- central person in the story
- part of the driving force of
the plot

Katniss Everdeen
8. Antagonist
- opposition
- against the protagonist

Professor Snape
9. Villain
- similar to antagonist
- evil

Voldemort
10. Foil
- opposite of another
character (reflects the
contrary)

Draco Malfoy
Literary characters may embody more than one of
these character types at the same time. A dynamic
character may also be the antagonist, and a
protagonist
can also be, say, a flat and stock character (i.e. the
one-dimensional hero).
