What is CAD?

• Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computers to aid in the

creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design.
• CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer,
improve the quality of design, improve communications through
documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing.
Examples of CAD

• AUTOCAD, 3ds Max and Maya —

commercial CAD software titles
published by Autodesk.
• Blender — an open source CAD,
animation, and image processing
application with an active community
of users.
• SketchUp — a proprietary CAD
application that runs in a Web browser
formerly developed by Google.
How can CAD be used?

• CAD is mainly used for detailed engineering of 3D models or 2D

drawings of physical components, but it is also used throughout the
engineering process from conceptual design and layout of products,
through strength and dynamic analysis of assemblies to definition of
manufacturing methods of components.
Types of CAD

• AUTOCAD
• FreeCAD
• CATIA
• OpenSCAD
• Autodesk Fusion 360
Negative Impacts of CAD

• Work can be lost because of the sudden breakdown of computers.

• Work is prone to viruses.
• Work could be easily “hacked”
• Time taking process to know how to operate or run the software.
• High production or purchasing cost for new systems.
• Time and cost of training the staff which will work on it.
Positive Impacts of CAD

• Increases Productivity
• Higher Quality Designs
• Reuse and Easily Change Designs
• Easier to Read
• Simplified Sharing
