WHAT IS PHENANTHRENE?
Phenanthrene is a polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbon composed of three fused
benzene rings.
In its pure form, it is found in cigarette
smoke and is a known irritant,
photosensitizing skin to light.
All fourteen carbon atoms are sp2
hybridized. The sp2 orbitals overlap
with each other and with s orbitals of ten
hydrogen atoms to C-C and C-H σ
bonds.

DERIVATIVE TO BE
DISCUSSED: MORPHINE

Chemical Formula: C17H19NO3

Morphine, a hydrophilic phenanthrene
derivative, is the opioid against which all
other opioids are compared for
equianalgesic potency.
Morphine is an opioid medication. An
opioid is sometimes called a narcotic.
REACTIONS OF
MORPHINE
USES OF MORPHINE
It is a potent analgesic, though its use is limited due to tolerance, withdrawal, and
the risk of abuse.
Morphine extended-release tablets and capsules are only used to relieve severe pain
that cannot be controlled by the use of other pain medications.
Morphine is used for the management of chronic, moderate to severe pain.
Morphine has a time to onset of 6-30 minutes.
WHAT HAPPENS IN MORPHINE
TOXICITY?
Patients experiencing an overdose present with respiratory depression, somnolence
(sleepiness), skeletal muscle flaccidity, cold and clammy skin.
Symptoms of overdose can progress to pulmonary oedema, bradycardia, hypotension,
cardiac arrest, and death.
Treat overdose with symptomatic and supportive treatment which may include the use of
oxygen, vasopressors, and naloxone.
Suddenly stopping this medication may cause withdrawal, especially if you have used it for a
long time or in high doses. To prevent withdrawal, your doctor may lower your dose slowly.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if you have any withdrawal symptoms such as
restlessness, mental/mood changes (including anxiety, trouble sleeping, thoughts of suicide),
watering eyes, runny nose, nausea, diarrhea, sweating, muscle aches, or sudden changes in
behavior.
