STATEMENT
Lack of public spaces ,representing the culture and which
can be really used.
AIM
To design a urban space into a recreational space , which
represents the Dravidian architecture style .
OBJECTIVE
As my aim is to design a recreational space which
represents the Dravidian architecture , I want to design ,
Art and craft exhibition space , public reading area ,
cafeterias and shades seating areas.
INTRODUCTION
First of all let us discuss about culture . What is culture?
Culture is a combination of particular things like : way of living ,
habits ,traditions of a person or a group in a particular place.
As soon as we think of the word tradition the things which strike is about , food ,
literature ,temples and arts .
When it comes to food , being a essential element for survival ,it has way of
sustaining in homes and restaurants.
Literature is being taught inn the primary level it self and will be used through
out the life .
When it comes to temples , they have thousands years of history ,when we stop
looking temples as only a place of worship , we can understand what temple is
even about.
Temples which were were built few centuries ago have a great Architecture in
them , the builders did not limit them selfs just by providing a simple shade ,
putting all efforts to carve it and created a master piece .
Temples which were were built few centuries ago have a
great Architecture in them , the builders did not limit them
selfs just by providing a simple shade , putting all efforts to
carve it and created a master piece .
There is a lot much to see into a temple , the architecture
style , the ornamentation ,the paintings .
They just not only use the sculptures or the carvings for
decoration ,but for representing a documenting the culture
and history of that place.
So when we are getting inspired from different things for a
architecture concept , why not use temple architecture to
redesign or design . Which includes the art and architecture.
As I want to design a recreational space , representing
Dravidian architecture style , firstly lets discuss about the
Temple styles in India.
When we discuss about the architecture styles in
India ,broadly there three styles.
The Nagara style ,Dravidian style and the Vesara style.
The Nagara style is for the north india .
The Dravidian style is for the south india.
As we are discussing about the Dravidian style ,the states
which come under these category are
AndhraPradesh
Telangana
Kerala
Karnataka
Tamilnadu
LITERATURE STUDY
Now let us discuss about the temple architecture and art
style of Andhra Pradesh.
Venkateswara swamy temple , Tirumala.
Simhachalam.
Veerabhadra temple.
VEERABHADRA TEMPLE CARVINGS
When we observe the architecture style of the temples
in Andhra pradesh , we can obsereve that the vimana
of all the temples are the same ,which is the linear
type.
When it comes to the sikhara type there are two types
of sikharas ,one is the barrel vault type another one is
the octagonal sphere.
The vimana is ornamented with sculptures but not
coloured.
ART IN ANDHRA PRADESH
KALANKARI IS THE ART STYLE OF
ANDHRAPRADESH
Now let us discuss about the temple architecture and art
style of Telangana.
Thousand pillar temple.
Ramappa temple.
When we observe the architecture style in hyderabad
the entry mandap is the initial attraction .
When we observe the coloumn style in thousand pillar
temple there is no intricate detail but just made with
basic shapes.
When it comes to the case of the ramappa temple , the
coloums are ornamented with human figures and
yalis.
While we observe the vimana of the temple ,the
vimana for the ramappa temple is linear ,without a
distinct sikhara.
As observed the temple is ornamented ,but not
painted.
ART IN TELANGANA.
Cheriyal Scroll Paintings and the Mughal Paintings.
Now let us discuss about the temple architecture and art
style of Kerala.
Padmanabha swami temple.
Sabarimala temple.
While we observe the architecture style in
Padmanabhaswami temple it follows the dravidian
style which is the vimana and sikhara , when it comes
to the internal part of the temple it follows the kerala
vernacular architecture that is the thatched roofs and
the courtyrads.
When it comes to the sabarimala temple ,it follows
only the vernacular style ,but not the dravidian style.
ART IN KERALA.
 Kalamezhuthu, a ritual art in which the pictures of
Gods and Goddesses are drawn on the floor using
coloured powders, is another system of painting
prevalent in Kerala.
Now let us discuss about the temple architecture and art
style of Karnataka.
Virupaksha temple.
While we observe the style ,the vimana is linear with a
barrel vault sikhara ,it has no intricate detail of
ornmentation , but broadly it has columns and some
some sculptures on it.
While we see the internal part of the temple , it has
good sculpted columns , carved walls , painted murals
on ceiling and walls.
ART IN KARNATAKA
Chittara is the tradition art in kerala.
Now let us discuss about the temple architecture and art
style of Tamilnadu.
Meenakshi temple
While we observe the architecture style , the vimana is
of linear and while it comes to the sikhara ,it is same
as the barrel vault.
When we see the ornamentation on the vimana ,it is
detailed with sculptures and are coloured. The detail is
so intricate that we cant find a space left without
detail.
Coming to the internal parts ,they are long corridors
with carved columns and painted ceilings.
Nataraja temple.
When we observe the architecture style the vimana is
linear and the sikhara is barrel vault type .
When it comes to the ornamentation of the vimana ,it
is detailed with beautifully painted sculptures
The corridors are long with a well carved columns on
either side.
The walls are decorated with human figures.
Finally the ceiling is decorated and painted , in some
parts the ceilings are painted with history regarding
the temple .
Art in tamilnadu
Thanjavur painting.
REQUIREMENTS
As a part of my topic , the requirements of my design
are.
CAFETERIAS
PUBLIC READING SPACES
ART AND CRAFT EXHIBITION
SHADED SEATING AREAS
PUBLIC WASHROOMS
CAFETERIAS
Cafeteria is a small food location ,with serving tables
and counters.
As a part of the design , ill include space for indoor
games such as Chess , Life size snakes and ladders and
other indoor games.
In these kind of relaxation spaces , even interiors play
a major role as they create an ambience.
So I would create interiors and the other spaces
accordingly to the culture elements and the south
indian art.
Some examples on how I want to work on the interiors
The public reading space is a kind of library where people
can visit that place through out the day , and can refer
books , being a useful place people can use it productively.
ART AND CRAFT EXHIBITION.
This is a daily art and craft exhibition ,where arts and crafts
related to local space .
Not only it can be used in a commercial way , Art and
panting sector is gaining importance ,where many people are
intrested in it and even it willl encourage people to consider
art as a profession but not only as a hobby , creating a
platform like this encourage people with real talent.
The beach road being a regular visiting space and even a
tourist attraction , it will create a platform for people to show
up their talent and by not confining it to themselves.
SHADED SEATING SPACES .
The shaded seating spaces designed for the public ,will
be in the style of Dravidian architecture , representing
the style of the south states.

REPRESENTATIONS
LOCATION
LOCATION : BEACH ROAD
CLIMATE : Warm and Humid
Beach road is a tourist attraction and even a common
place visited by the local people , so selecting beach road
as location becomes an advantage for the design.
SCOPE
With these redesign of a urban space with cultural elements ,I can reflect
the culture and history of that place, the design being a recreational space ,
there is a lot more chance where it can be used by the locals as well as the
tourists.
Beach road being a well know place in Visakhapatnam , as soon as when
some one reminds of Visakhapatnam , Beach road is one of the famous
places where some wants to visit regularly.
When we see the in and around spaces in the beach road , there are culture
representing elements ,but not really which can be used by the people.
So me designing the urban space in the context of culture ,it will be a
scope to my design ,as it creates a hierarchy in that place.
Setting up a art and craft exhibition will encourage people , and create a
platform for them.
HYPOTHESIS
By studying the dravidian style of architecture , I can
design the recreational spaces using that architectural
style ,and incorporate in the design.
The things what ever will be designed will follow all
the required barrier free elements.
Creating a art and craft exhibition to create a platform
for the people with real talent.
This is not a proposed project , but a hypothetical
project.
LIMITATIONS
As my main aspect is cultural elements , I should not
be using any contemporary styles.
As the site is in Visakhapatnam , and it being a warm
and humid climate , and the near beach the humidity
is more, I need to consider the occupant comfort.
