Treatments for PTSD

There are a number of treatments for PTSD which include various


therapies and medications.
These treatments are used to minimize, eliminate symptoms that
people with PTSD often experience.
Medications

SSRI’s are used to treat PTSD but are primarily used


to treat anxiety and depression. Some of these
medications included are:
Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac

• SNRI’s are often used for depression, but are also effective for
treatment of PTSD. Effexor is one that is commonly used and most
effective.
Side Effects
Some common side effects for these medications are:

weight gain insomnia drowsiness


All medications should be taken as prescribed by your physician. DO
NOT
Suddenly stop SSRI’s it could lead to symptoms of withdrawal such as:
Anxiety, dizziness, and GI upset
What things to avoid
Some things to avoid while taking SSRI’s/ antianxiety medications are:

• Alcohol is not recommended with use of SSRI’s due to increase in


drowsiness

• Caffeine enhances the effects so individuals who drink large amounts


of caffeine may experience palpitations, restlessness, and insomnia
Psychotherapies
There are various psychotherapies used to treat PTSD
several which are trauma focused some examples are:

Cognitive Processing Therapy- which focuses on how your traumatic


event is perceived and how you cope emotionally and mentally.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy- is a talk therapy that focuses on the


relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This type
therapy can be done individually or in a group setting.
