PURPOSE:
To lower the mother’s blood
pressure and to prevent
complications to occur.
MAGNESIUM SULFATE

ASSESSMENT: BLOOD PRESSURE

● Give the second dose if the blood


pressure taken is higher than the initial
one.
● Hold the dose if the blood pressure taken
is lower than the initial one.

ASSESSMENT: URINE OUTPUT

● Urine output should be 20 to 30 cc/hr for


clients with foley catheter
● Do not give the second dose if the client
presents an output lower than normal

ASSESSMENT: RESPIRATION RATE

● Respiration rate should be more than 12


breaths per minute.
● Do not give the second dose if the client
presents respiration rate lower than
normal

ASSESSMENT: PATELLAR REFLEX

● If the client presents (+) knee jerk,


continue administering the medication
● If the client presents (-) knee jerk, do not
administer the medication and notify the
physician immediately
MAGNESIUM SULFATE

DEFINITION:
This drug, classified as a
cathartic, reduces edema by
causing a shift in fluid from the
extracellular spaces into the
intestine. (ACOG, 2016C)
MAGNESIUM SULFATE

DEFINITION:
It also has a central nervous
system depressant action (it
blocks peripheral neuromuscular
transmissions), which lessens the
possibility of seizures (Karch,
2015).
MAGNESIUM SULFATE

DOSAGE:
4-5 g (diluted in 250 mL NS/D5W)
Intravenously
10 g (20 mL of undiluted 50%
solution) divided and administered
Intramuscularly into each buttock
