HOMOGENOUS CHARGE
PREPARATION
 Port fuel injection

 Early direct injection

 Late direct injection

 Port Fuel Injection

 Fuel injected at intake valve

 Better blend of charge

 Fuel evaporation is a drawback

Early direct injection

 Fuel injected during compression stroke

 Enhances the evaporation process

 Less time for complete mixing of charge

Late direct injection

 Fuel injected just before TDC

 Rapid formation of homogenous mixture

 Auto Ignition delay increases

HCCI ENGINE COMBUSTION
CONTROL METHODS
 Pre-heat intake air

 Pressurized intake air

 Varying compression ratio

 Fuel injection pressure

 Fuel air ratio

ADVANTAGES

 High efficiency

 Low emissions

 Can use variety of fuels

 No knocking phenomenon
LIMITATIONS

 Auto ignition is difficult to control

 Low power range

 Initial start at cold conditions is difficult

 Wear and tear occurs in engine

ON GOING RESEARCH

 Mazda is undertaking research with HCCI

with Wankel engines

 Ford, Nissan, Toyoto, Volvo, VW, General motor etc.,

have been performing research on HCCI combustion.

 Honda is producing a 2-stroke cycle gasoline engine

using HCCI for motor cycles
CONCLUSION

HCCI engine offers the advantages of both SI and

CI engines overcoming their individual drawbacks
