TELEMEDICINE
• Telemedicine allows health care professionals to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients at a distance
using telecommunications technology.
• The approach has been through a striking evolution in the last decade and it is becoming an increasingly
important part of the healthcare infrastructure.
Definition
Telemedicine can be defined as the use of technology (computers, video, phone, messaging) by a medical
professional to diagnose and treat patients in a remote location.
TELEMEDICINE BENEFITS
Using telemedicine as an alternative to in-person visits has a host of benefits for patients and providers alike.
Patients enjoy:
• Less time away from work
• No travel expenses or time
• Less interference with child or elder care responsibilities
• Privacy
• No exposure to other potentially contagious patients
Providers enjoy:
• Increased revenue
• Improved office efficiency
• An answer to the competitive threat of retail health clinics and on-line only providers
• Better patient follow through and improved health outcomes
• Fewer missed appointments and cancellations
• Private payer reimbursement
ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORD SYSTEM
An electronic medical record (EMR) is a digital version of a patient’s paper chart. EMRs are real-time,
patient-centered records that make information available instantly and securely to authorized users.
While an EMR does contain the medical and treatment histories of patients, an EMR system is built to
go beyond standard clinical data collected in a provider’s office and can be inclusive of a broader view
of a patient’s care. EHRs are a vital part of health IT and can:
• Contain a patient’s medical history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, immunization dates,
allergies, radiology images, and laboratory and test results
• Allow access to evidence-based tools that providers can use to make decisions about a patient’s
care
• Automate and streamline provider workflow
One of the key features of an EMR is that health information can be created and managed by
authorized providers in a digital format capable of being shared with other providers across more
than one health care organization. EMRs are built to share information with other health care
providers and organizations – such as laboratories, specialists, medical imaging facilities, pharmacies,
emergency facilities, and school and workplace clinics – so they contain information from all clinicians
involved in a patient’s care.
