ABOUT MONASTERY OF CROSS
• Legend has it that the monastery was erected
on the burial spot of Adam's head—though
two other locations in Jerusalem also claim
this honor—from which grew the tree that
gave its wood to the cross on
which Christ was crucified.
WHAT IS MONASTERY CROSS
• The Monastery and its adjacent parkland in West
Jerusalem are surrounded by Israel’s Knesset
(Parliament) to the north, the Israel Museum to the
west, the upmarket Rehavia neighbourhood to the
east, and four-lane highways on the south and east.
HOW IT WAS FOEMED
• The monastery was built in the eleventh. It is
believed that the site was originally
consecrated in the fourth century under the
instruction of the Roman emperor Constantine
the Great who later gave the site to
king Mirian III of Kartli after the conversion of
his kingdom to Christianity in 327 AD
MONASTIC LIFE
• Christian monastic life originates first in the East,
with St. Anthony taking to the desert of Egypt in the
early medieval period.  This type of solitary
monasticism got its inspiration from important
figures in the Christian faith such as St. John the
Baptist, the Prophet Elijah, and Jesus’ time spent in
the desert.  There were many others who embraced
this early type of monasticism, including St. Benedict
in the beginning of his spiritual life.
HOW MONKS AND NUNS LIVE
• Monks and nuns inhabit the lowest rung of
the hierarchy in the Catholic Church. Religious
brothers and sisters aren’t members of the
clergy, but they aren’t members of the lay
faithful, either. They’re called consecrated
religious, which means that they’ve taken
sacred vows of poverty, chastity, and
obedience.
