INJURIES FROM POWER TOOLS ARE

SIMILAR TO HAND TOOLS, BUT CAN BE
MUCH MORE SEVERE
LINE OF FIRE? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
WOULD YOU CALL THIS LINE OF FIRE?
WOULD YOU CALL THIS LINE OF FIRE?
Power Tools
According to estimates made by the
US Consumer Product Safety Commission,
more than 310,000 injuries involving
workshop power tools required medical
attention in the United States in 1995.
About one-third (87,000) of these injuries
were associated with power saws, both
portable and stationary.
General Requirements
Each contractor /sub Contractor should be
responsible for:

 Maintaining safe condition of tools

 All tools are inspected and color coded.
 No home made tools are brought to worksite.
 Defective tools are marked and removed
from site.
 Daily check by the User
Tool Inspection Program

inspection color coding
system.

The 5 basic rules
 Keep all tools in good condition with regular maintenance.
 Use the right tool for the job.
 Examine each tool for damage before use

and do not use damaged tools.

 Operate tools according to the manufacturers' instructions.
 Provide and use properly the right personal protective equipment.
Expanded Rules
 Always use the tools safely
 Use good quality tools
 Stand firm and keep a solid grip
 Do not overload a tool
 Anticipate the reactive force from tools
 Foresee results of unexpected occurrences
 Check any tool that was jammed or overstressed
Expanded Rules

• Tools that involve weights and

spring tension…apply and release
pressure in a safe manner

• Follow lock out procedures (Unplug

the tool before servicing or changing
discs, bits, or other attachments)

• Do not by-pass interlocks on

equipment

• Store hand tools in a safe place

• Do not use a faulty tool
Hand Tools Selection
 Most jobs have a tool to help accomplish the task.
 Find the right tool and use it correctly.
 Over-reach and poor position can cause slips and injury.
Hand Tool Maintenance
 Wooden handles of tools must be kept free of splinters and
tight in the tool. If a handle is loose, the head of the tool
may fly off and strike the user or other employees.
 If impact tools such as chisels, wedges, or drift pins have
mushroomed heads, the heads might shatter on impact.
 Avoid holding a screwdriver such that if it slips, it will stab
your hand. Looks ready ready?
for use?
Is it really
 Avoid using improvised tools.
Hand Tool Practices
 When using saw blades, knives, or other tools, direct the
tools away from aisle areas and away from other employees.
 Knives and scissors must be sharp; dull tools can cause more
hazards than sharp ones.
 If a chisel is used as a screwdriver, the tip of the chisel may
break and fly off, hitting the user or other employees.
 A file without a handle can be extremely dangerous. Keep a
handle on every file to prevent hand injury.
 Wrenches, including adjustable, pipe, end, and socket
wrenches shall not be used when jaws are sprung to the
point that slippage occurs.
Common Striking Tools

Hammer / Axe / Hatchet

 Keep your hammers in good repair (flat heads)
 Keep axes and hatchets with sharp cutting edges
 Replace cracked or splintered handles
 Select the right size for the job;

A light hammer bounces off the work.

 One that's too heavy is hard to control
Common Hazards
Hand Held Grinders --- There are three common
hazards associated:

 If a grinding wheel shatters at high speed, injury

could result.
 If your hands touch the wheel you will lose skin and
flesh.
 If the work piece gets very hot, your fingers could
be burned.
Common Hazards
Stand or Mounted Grinders
 Follow Mfg’s instructions for grinding
wheel speed limitations
 Keep guards properly adjusted (for
example, not to exceed 1/8 inch)
 The maximum angular exposure of
the grinding wheel periphery and
sides shall not exceed 180 degrees.
 Do not grind on the side of the wheel unless so rated
 Stand to the side until wheel reaches full speed
 Abrasive wheels must be flat (for example, properly “dressed”)
Electrical Tool Practices
 Operate electric tools within their design limitations.
 Use gloves and appropriate safety footwear when using electric
tools.
 Store electric tools in a dry place when not in use.
 Do not use electric tools in wet locations unless they are
approved for that purpose.
 Keep work areas well lighted when operating electric tools.
 Ensure that cords from electric tools do not present a tripping
hazard.
Electrical Tool Practices
 Electric power operated tools shall either be of the approved
double-insulated type or grounded.
 Grounding circuits must be systematically checked.
 The use of electric cords for hoisting or lowering tools shall not be
permitted.
 All electrical tools or equipment should undergo a
visual inspection prior to use.
Dead Man Switch

All hand-held powered tools shall be equipped

with a constant pressure switch or control
that will shut off the power when the pressure
is released.

Some tools…..may have a lock-on control

provided that turnoff can be accomplished
by a single motion of the same finger
that turns it on. See site requirements.
