 Tone and mood are often confused,
so now would be a good time to
make sure you understand
the difference between the two.
 If tone is the author's attitude
toward a subject, then mood is
how we are made to feel as readers,
or the emotion evoked by the
author.

MOTIVATION
DEFINITION
Context clues are hints
that an author gives to help
define a difficult or unusual word.
The clue may appear within the
same sentence as the word to
which it refers, or it may follow
in a preceding sentence.

Sometimes a word's or phrase's meaning is
explained immediately after its use.

AFFIXES AND ROOTS
DEFINITION
 In addition to context clues, the meaning
of words can be derived through analysis.
This means breaking down the word into
smaller parts.
 One of these parts is the affix which
can be at the beginning, prefix or at the
end, suffix. Study also the remaining
letters after the affix is taken away. Get
the meaning of these words through the
use of affix.
