Jesus Message
for Me
The story of the birth of
Jesus carries with it
important messages. It is
not just an event of
ordinary birth; it is a joyful
news and a most awaited
event.
The account of the birth of
Jesus, the first Christmas
is found in the passage
from the gospel of Luke.
The Birth of Jesus Lk 2:1:14

◦ At that time the Emperor issued a decree for a census of the whole empire to be taken. So everyone set out for his
own city; Joseph set out too for Nazareth of Galilee. As he belonged to the family of David, being a descendant of
his, he went to Judea to David’s town of Bethlehem to be registered with Mary, his wife, who was with a child.

They were in Bethlehem when the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth, to her son, her first born.
She wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid him in the manger, because there was no place for them at the inn.

There were shepherds camping in the countryside, taking turns to watch over their flocks by night. Suddenly an
angel of the Lord appeared to them, with the glory of the Lord shining around them.

As they were terrified, the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid; I am here to give you good news, great joy for all
the people. Today a savior has been born to you in David’s town; He is the Messiah and the Lord. Let this be a sign
to you; you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in the manger.”

Suddenly the angel was surrounded by many more heavenly spirits, praising God and saying. “Glory to God in the
highest; peace on earth for God is blessing humankind.
The Church Teaches
Jesus’ Message

The story of the birth

of Jesus carries with it
a very meaningful
message for the people
of God.
This message is
explained in the Church
teaching that follows.
The Christmas Mystery
◦ Jesus was born in a humble stable, into a poor family. Simple shepherds were the
first witnesses to this event. In this poverty, heaven’s glory was made manifest.
The Church never tires of singing the glory of this night:
◦ The Virgin today brings into the world the Eternal and the earth offers a cave to
the inaccessible. The angels and shepherds praise Him and the magi advance with
the star, for you are born for us, little Child, God eternal!
◦ To become a child in relation to God is the condition for entering the kingdom. For
this, we must humble ourselves and become little. Even more: to become”
children of God” we must be “born from above” or “born of God.” Only when
Christ is formed in us will the mystery of Christmas be fulfilled in us. CCC525-

Jesus Message
Exposed
The Christmas Season
• Christmas is the most widely celebrated
season in the world and the most
extravagant.
• It is often characterized by giving gifts,
singing of Christmas carols and joyous
celebrations. All these events that
accompany the celebration of Christmas
hides its true meaning.
• To recapture the meaning of Christmas,
we have to go back to the event of
Jesus’ birth- the very first Christmas.
The 1st Christmas
• The birth of Jesus in a humble setting
brings across to us what it means to be a
child of God.
• To be a child of God, first means to accept
our humble state before God.
• In the account from the Gospel of Luke,
two striking characteristics of Jesus birth
are presented,
• first, Mary wrapped the baby Jesus in
swaddling clothes and laid Him in the
manger, because there was no place
for them at the inn;
• and second,. the angels announced
Jesus’ birth to humble shepherds
The Characteristics of a
True Children of God

• These two characteristics tells

us that to be true children of
God, we must develop the
virtues of
• simplicity,
• humility,
• and child-like innocence
that Jesus teaches both in words
and deeds.
The True spirit of
Christmas

• When we become like children, we begin

to live in us the true spirit of Christmas.
• In the “Story of Christmas,” the Spirits of
Christmas Present told Scrooge that
• the Child in Bethlehem lives not only
for one day but all throughout the
year,
• and that He lives in the hearts of men
of good will.
The Christmas Season
• The season of Christmas does not last for the entire liturgical year because it
is just one of the seasons.
• Christmas is celebrated throughout the Christmas Octave, the eight days
from December 25 through January 1.
• The second day of the festival, December 26, is the fourth day is devoted to
the memory of the Holy Infants of Bethlehem (on that day priest offer
special blessings to children).
• Sunday, which falls on one of the days between December 26-31, or, if none
of the days is a Sunday in a particular year, December 30 marks the feast of
the Holy Family: the Christ child, the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph.
• January 1 marks the joy of Holy Virgin.
• Christmas tide continues beyond the Octave until the Baptism of Christ,
Throughout the Christmas holidays the clergy are clad in festive white robes.
The Spirit of
Christmas
• Even if this is so, we believe that the spirit of Christmas
lives on even if the season is over.
• The spirit of Christ is the spirit of giving.
• Jesus is God’s greatest gift to us even if we do not
deserve such gift.
• The generosity of God shown on Christmas moves us to
be generous too even if we may not have much to share
with those who are in need.
• The spirit of Christmas is a spirit of joy and good news.
The angel who appeared to the shepherds announced to
them this spirit of joy and good news challenges us to
bring the good news of salvation to all the people.
God’s Children

To experience the joy of

Christmas we must be “born
from above” or born from God.
This means that during Christmas
and throughout the whole year,
we need to maintain a heart that
is clean so that we rightfully call
ourselves God’s children.
