MIASM : DISCOVERY OF MIASM
• The theory of chronic disease was first introduced in
the 4th edition of organon medicine in the year 1829.
• This theory is known as a result of Hahnemann’s
practical and clinical experience.
• Hahnemann while practicing homoeopathy for
around 30 years he observed that acute diseases
were successfully treated, but chronic diseases were
not controlled. Despite all efforts these chronic
diseases grew worse from year to year.
MIASM : DISCOVERY OF MIASM
Cause for the failure of the homoeopathic treatment in
the chronic diseases according to Hahnemann are -
 The law of similia might not be the law of universal
application.
 The number of homoeopathic medicines discovered so
far were too few to cover the variety of disease
conditions.
 There may be some defect in the application of law of
similia.
 There may be some defect in the collection of totality of
symptoms for homoeopathic treatment.
 Some obstacle which prevented the long lasting cure
MIASM : DISCOVERY OF MIASM

• Hahnemann logically and practically answered all his

questions. And the last but not least is the doubt of
some obstacle in the recovery, he called this major
obstacle as the miasms.

• After prolonged investigations and observations

Hahnemann discovered that in most of the cases this
obstacle dated back to the former eruption of itch.
• Hahnemann states in the footnote to $80 “I have
spent around 12 years in investigating the source of
the chronic diseases, based on the ascertained
proofs”.
• He finally concluded that the cause of all the chronic
diseases is the multi-headed monster Psora.
• In aphorism no. 5, he describes the fundamental
causes of Chronic Diseases are due to Chronic
Miasmas.
DIFFERENT STALWARTS VIEW ON MIASMS

• Hippocrates - First physician to use the term ‘miasm’

which has its origins in the Greek word for ‘taint or
fault’. He postulated that certain infectious disease were
transmitted to humans by air and water tainted by
miasms.
• H.A. Roberts linked the miasmatic stigmata with
disturbed assimilation.
• Eizayaga and Ortega- relates the miasms to
disturbances of the most important vital functions.
• O.A. Julian- in 1984, O.A. Julian and M. Haffen give a
view of miasms, based in modern concepts of
genetics, biochemistry , molecular biology,
toxicology, immunology and ecology.
• J.T. Kent’s view on miasms - Psora is the beginning of
all physical sickness.
• Harsh Nigam – recognizes miasm as dynamic
alteration of dynamic vital force.
• J.H. Allen- maggots that are born in mind.
• Sir John Weir - miasm means germ disease.
• P.S. Ortega - as causa causorum / the cause of causes
which is demonstrable and perfectly recognizable.
• Stuart Close – a non material unwhole some
exhalation/a polluting agent affecting the living being
in a very subtle and detrimental manner, bending the
economy for the manifestation of an unlimited
number of diseases.
