BASIC CONCEPTS OF PROBABILITY
PROBABILITY is a field of mathematics that deals with
___________
chance.
EXPERIMENT is an activity in which the results
An ___________
cannot be predicted with certainty. Example; tossing a
coin and rolling a die
OUTCOME
An ____________ is a result of an experiment
EVENT is any collection of outcomes and a
An ________
SIMPLE EVENT
_________________ is an event with only one
possible outcome.
BASIC CONCEPTS OF PROBABILITY
SAMPLE SPACE is the set of all possible
The _____________
outcomes of an experiment
EXAMPLE
EXPERIMENT SAMPLE SPACE EVENT
The event that
a head will
occur.
HEAD TAIL
Tossing a coin S= The event that
even number
will appears
S=
Rolling a die
PROBABILITY OF AN EVENT
The probability of simple events: If each of the
outcomes in a sample space is equally likely to happen,
then the probability of an event is given by

P(E) = or
P(E) =
Probability of the Complement
The probability of non-occurrence of the event (called its
failure) or probability of the complement of an event is denoted
by
P(E)’ = 1 – P(E)

Notice the apostrophe ( ‘ ) after E indicates that the event

does not occur.
Thus,
P(E) + P(E’) = 1.
PROPERTIES OF PROBABILITY OF AN EVENT
1.A probability is a number between 0 and 1 ,
inclusive
2. The probability of an event that cannot be
happen is 0
3.The probability of an event must happen is 1
4. If the probability of an event E is P(E) , then
the probability of the compliment of E is 1-P(E).
EXAMPLE 1: In the spinner, what is
the probability that the spinner will
land on red?
Sample space =

P(red)=
P(red) =
EXAMPLE 2: In the spinner, what is
the probability that the spinner will
not land on red?
Sample space =

P(red)’=1 -
P(red)’ = 1 - =
EXAMPLE 3: A coin is tossed, find the probability of getting head.

Sample space =
N(S) =2
N(E) = 1
P(Head) =
P(Head) =
EXAMPLE 3: A coin is tossed, find the probability of not getting
head.
Sample space =
N(S) =2
N(E) = 1
P(Head)’ = 1 -
P(Head)’ = 1-
P(Head)’ =
Application: Three coins are tossed, What is the
probability of getting:
7 4 1
𝑜𝑟
8
_______1. 8 2
Not three heads? _______4. at least two tails
3 7
8
_______2. two heads? 8
_______5. at most two tails
3 1
8
_______3. one head? 8
_______6. no tails?
Analysis
 In your own understanding, how will you define
Probability
 How will you find probability of simple events?
 How will you find probability of the complements of
an event?
 How the probability helps you in making decisions in
real life problems?
EVALUATION SOLVE THE PROBLEM
1. A box containing 3 red balls, 5 yellow balls and 2 blue
balls. If a ball is picked at random from the box, what is
the probability that the ball picked is a yellow ball?
2. What is the probability of choosing a heart from a
standard deck of playing cards?
3. Choose the probability that has the best chance
a. P (purple)
b. P(red)
c. P(blue)
d. P(yellow)
