Thorndike and the Law of Effect

Thorndike prefers to conduct actual experiments rather than rely on anecdotal evidence of learning. He
performed an experiment in which he placed a cat inside a box and let them figure out how to get out using
levers and latches. There is data that indicates how long the kitten spends to get out of the box and how quickly
the kitten gets out of the box after each trial. The law of effect is sometimes misunderstood as an R-O
association, although it involves an association between stimulus and response, or S-R association.

The concept of Operant Conditioning is built on the idea of increasing and decreasing a behavior by adding a
consequence. ABCs Behavior is an observation method that may be used to assess what happened before,
during, and after a behavior. It stands for antecedent, behavior, and consequence.
