Assessment as learning

Assessment as Learning refers to students' use of continuous self-assessment to monitor their learning,
which is "marked by students reflecting on their learning and making modifications so that they gain deeper
comprehension.“ Assessment as learning takes place when students reflect on and assess their progress to
guide their future learning objectives.

When pupils are their assessors, assessment as learning happens. Students monitor their learning, ask
questions, and employ a variety of tactics to determine what they know and can accomplish, as well as how to
apply assessment data to new learning.

Assessment as learning

As we gain more ability to create and share our learning with the world, we must recognize that a great deal of
learning occurs during the process of sharing our knowledge through assessment. Learning occurs when a learner
creates a SoundCloud podcast to demonstrate how they speak a language, a YouTube video to demonstrate problem-
solving, or a digital portfolio to bring all of these things together. Not only can you examine what a student knows
about this procedure on any given curricular objective(s), but there is also learning in the act of sharing through various
mediums. Something I'm constantly reminded of is that the curriculum is the very minimum of what we're obliged to
teach, but we may go above and beyond.

When we require all students to take the same exam or work on the same assignment, we limit learning through
the assessment process. Please understand that I am not implying that a test should never occur. The process of learning
is as necessary as, if not more important than, the output of learning. Our teaching is frequently influenced by how we
assess, so viewing it as part of the learning process will make it far more meaningful to the students you serve.
