Assessment, grading vs scoring, and rubrics

ASSESSMENT
WHAT IS ASSESSMENT?
Assessment is a wide variety of tools or
methods for teachers to evaluate
students understanding and the
proficiency of the educator (Assessment
definition 2015). There are many
different forms of assessment, in this
newsletter we will learn more about
diagnostic, summative, and formative.

Diagnostic
Diagnostic assessment is a pretest. This form of
assessment is used as an indicator to educators
of what the students know before learning. It
show what background knowledge the students
have, helping the teacher create their lesson
plans based on previous knowledge. An example
of this type of assessment is having the students
take a test before learning said topic.
Summative
Summative assessment is used at the end of a
learning period to evaluate the students
understanding of the topic. This assessment can
occur at the end of a project, unit, course,
semester, program, or school year (Summative
assessment definition 2013). Summative
assessment is either test, assignments, or
projects to determine what a student has
learned.
Formative
Formative assessment is a form of assessment
that is conducted while learning to evaluate
students learning and understanding. It is a great
tool for educators to determine what students
have mastered and what they are still struggling
with and need to spend more time on. Some
examples of formative assessment are pop
quizzes, exit slips, diagnosis tests, and many
more.
GRADING AND
S ORING
C
Grading is a continuous process through
the entire school year. Grading for students
is a letter grade they receive throughout
the course of the year such as A, B, C, D, or
F. Scoring is the number they receive on an
assignment such as a project, paper, or
test. These scores are usually zero though
a hundred but could change.
RUBRI S C

WHY STUDENTS SHOULD BE

INVOLVED IN CREATING THEIR
OWN RUBRICS
Allowing students to help create their own rubrics
can be very beneficial for them. It allows them to
create clear learning targets and become more
successful. It also engages students more in their
projects or papers, and lets them monitor their
progress. Although there are some downfalls to
allowing students to create their own rubrics
such as the time it takes to guide students and
plan this into lesson time. Even with the cons, the
pros outweigh them, and creates more successful
students. A great way to incorporate it into lesson
plans is to first show students examples of good
and bad projects, then allow students to create T
charts in which they mark strong and weak
qualities. The educators will go over the
standards with the students then create a final
rubric with students. (Gallucci 2018)
MY
PHILOSOPHY
My goal and philosophy this year is to make
math as engaging and rewarding as possible.
There is a problem with "I can't" attitudes
around math but in my classroom that will
not be a thing. Our goals will be learner-
centered with students success being my
number one priority. Students will have the
desire to learn, and find math pleasurable,
interesting, and helpful. I look forward to
teaching your students, and feel free to
reach out to me for anything!
