Cooling System Functions

 Remove Heat Generated from Fuel Combustion

• Burn Temperatures Can Reach 3,500°F (1927°C)
 Transfer Heat From:
• Transmission Oil Coolers
• Hydraulic Oil Coolers
• Water Cooled Exhaust Manifolds
• Water Cooled Turbocharger Shields/Housings
• Torque Converter/Retarder Coolers
• Jacket Water After Coolers

Coolant
 Function
• Transfer Heat from Hot Engine Components to a Radiator or
Heat Exchanger
 Characteristics
• High Boiling Temperature
• Freeze Protection
• Corrosion Resistance
• Scale and Deposit Prevention
• Non Foaming
• Minimum Sediment
Heat Transfer

 Water Is the Most Efficient Heat Transfer

Agent
• Drawbacks:
– Contains Chlorides, Sulfates, and Suspended Solids
– Causes Scales, Deposits
– Leads to Clogged Radiators and Failed Water Pumps

– Builds Sediment
Heat Transfer

 Water Is the Most Efficient Heat Transfer

Agent
• Drawbacks:
– Improper pH Level
– Attacks Copper, Aluminum and Steel Engine Components
– Causes Corrosion
– Damages Seals
– Lower Boiling Point
– Lower Performance
Water Quality

 Must Conform to Established Levels of:

• Chloride 2.4 gr/gal max
• Sulfates 5.9 gr/gal max
• Total Hardness 10 gr/gal max
• Total Solids 20 gr/gal max
• pH Level 5.5 - 9.0
 Caterpillar Recommends Distilled or De-ionized Water
 Never Use Water Alone as a Coolant
Cat ELC

 Benefits:
• Lasts Twice as Long as Conventional Coolants, Such as
Cat DEAC in Cat Machines and Commercial Engines,
and Three Times as Long in Cat Truck Engines
• Requires No Supplemental Coolant Additives (SCA's),
Only Cat "Extender" at Half Life (3,000 hrs)
Cat ELC

 Benefits:
• Can be used in most OEM Diesel, Gasoline,
and Natural Gas Engines (Inventory one coolant for
entire fleet)
• Low Level of Total Dissolved Solids in Cat
ELC Improves Water Pump Seal Life
Cat ELC

 Benefits:
• Premixed 50% ELC, 50% De-ionized Water
– Ensures Water Quality
– Ensures Correct Antifreeze to Water Mix
• Eliminates Hard Water Scale
• No Phosphates or Silicates
• Reduces Coolant Costs from 42% -63% Over
DEAC
Cat ELC

 Benefits:
• Requires No SCA at 250 Hour Intervals
• Reduces Disposal Volume and Is Recyclable
• Prevents Gel Formation
• Additives That Help Protect Cylinder Liners From
Cavitation Corrosion Deplete Much Slower Than Those
for Conventional Coolants
Summary
Cat Extended Life Coolant

 Preferred Factory Fill

 At Least Twice Coolant Life of Cat DEAC
 Extender Needed Only Once
 Use in Most OEM Engines
 Environmentally Friendly
 Reduced Cost

Machine Coolant Recommendations.
Periodic Maintenance

INITIAL FILL
 Select proper water, supplemental coolant additive, &
antifreeze.
 Before the cooling system is filled, close all drain plugs.
 Do not fill the cooling system faster than 19 liters
( 5 gallons) per minute.
 After filling the cooling system, run the engine for
several minutes with the radiator cap off. Next, install
the radiator cap & run the engine at low idle until the
coolant becomes warm.
Periodic Maintenance

 10-HOUR OR DAILY CHECK

 Inspect the coolant level in the top tank.
 Remove foreign material & dirt from outside
the radiator core ( and between the panels of
folded core radiators).
Periodic Maintenance

50-HOUR INTERNAL
 Perform all 10-hour maintenance.
 Inspect zinc or magnesium rods if so equipped.
Periodic Maintenance

250-HOURS OR MONTHLY CHECK.

 Perform all 10 & 50-hours maintenance.
 Inspect the condition & tension of all fan belts. If
necessary, adjust or replace any belts.
 Test the coolant for freeze protection.
 Inspect the radiator cap gasket.
 Inspect all hoses for leaks.
 Inspect/check all engine grounds.
Periodic Maintenance

3000-HOURS OR 24 MONTH ( whichever occurs first).

 Perform all 10,50 &250-hours maintenance.
 Drain , clean & refill the cooling system.
 Inspect the condition of fan blades & guards..inspect
the condition of hoses & clamps. Tighten all clamps.
 Obtain a coolant analysis..
