The practice of raising specific fish species within a controlled
environment to increase its production and provide constant supply of fish for human consumption. QUIREMENTS FOR CONSTRUCTING A FISHPOND 1. The soil must be capable of retaining water. The ideal type is clayey soil. 2. There should be an adequate supply of clean water throughout the culture period. Water sources can be spring, river, rain, deep well, tap water, or government- controlled irrigation systems. 3. The site should be elevated to allow drainage. QUIREMENTS FOR CONSTRUCTING A FISHPOND 4. The lot should be at least 30 square meters with a maximum of 200 square meters. 5. The site should be free from flooding. 6. The site should be within an area where fish seedlings are readily available. TEPS IN CONSTRUCTING THE POND
1. Excavate the soil to form a dugout.
2. Use the extracted soil to form dikes. The cross section of dikes is trapezoidal in shape with a crown of at least 1 meter, base of 2 meters, and a height of 1.5 meters to 2 meters. If the pond is to be concrete, lay one concrete hallow block to form the wall of the pond. Do not cement the flooring because it will affect the production of natural fish food. TEPS IN CONSTRUCTING THE POND 2. Provide pipes for water inlet, a water outlet, and an overflow pipe. Let the bottom of the pond gradually slope towards the water outlet where the drainage pipe is located. 3. Level the pond bottom and put in the topsoil to increase the capability of the soil to hold water and allow the growth of algae. 4. Remove the toxic effect of cement in concrete ponds by washing the pond and draining it, at least three times. TEPS IN CONSTRUCTING THE POND
6. Drain the pond and let it dry. Fertilize the pond by
scattering chicken manure at the bottom with a ratio of 1 kilo for every 10 square meters. 7. Fill the pond with water about 5 centimeters to 10 centimeters high for a week to allow the growth of algae, which will serve as natural fish food. You will notice that water appears to be green. 8. Fill up the pond with water to the desired level of 1.5 meters.
