SEAM 2 - TRIM and STABILITY WEEK 3B -
ANGLE of LOLL / STATICAl STABILITY
Learning objective of week 3A
LO1.60 State that in this condition, GM is said to be negative
and is called the upsetting moment or capsizing moment
LO1.61 Explain how B may move sufficiently to reduce the
capsizing moment to zero at some angle of heel
LO1.62 Show that if G is raised above M, the couple formed
by the weight and buoyancy force will turn the ship further
from the upright
LO1.63 State that the angle at which the ship becomes stable
is known as the angle of loll
LO1.64 State that the ship will roll about the angle of loll
instead of the upright
LO1.65 State that an unstable ship may loll to either side
LO1.66 Explain why the condition described in the above
objective is potentially dangerous

Introduction
Negative GM and angle of loll

Ship having a negative

initial metacentric height
will be unstable when
inclined to a small angle.
In this condition, GM is
said to be negative and
is called the upsetting
moment or capsizing
moment.

Negative GM and angle of loll

Ship having a negative

initial metacentric height
will be unstable when
inclined to a small angle.
In this condition, GM is
said to be negative and
is called the upsetting
moment or capsizing
moment.

As the angle of heel

increases, the
center of buoyancy
will move out still
further to the low
side.

Negative GM and angle of loll

If the G is raised above

M, the couple formed
by the weight and
buoyancy force will turn
the ship further from
the upright

Negative GM and angle of loll

If the centre of buoyancy

moves out to a position
vertically under G, the
capsizing moment will have
disappeared.

The angle of heel at

which this occurs is
called the angle of
loll..

It will be noticed that

at the angle of loll, the
GZ is zero. G remains
on the centre line.

Mates
Negative GM and angle of loll

The ship will roll about

the angle of loll instead
of the upright..

LO1.64 Illustration source: Stability for Master and

Mates
Negative GM and angle of loll

The ship will roll about

the angle of loll instead
of the upright.

An unstable ship may

loll to either side and
the condition is
potentially dangerous.

Summary of week 3B
1. GM is said to be negative and is called the upsetting
moment or capsizing moment
2. B may move sufficiently to reduce the capsizing moment to
zero at some angle of heel
3. If G is raised above M, the couple formed by the weight
and buoyancy force will turn the ship further from the upright
4. Angle at which the ship becomes stable is known as the
angle of loll
5. Ship will roll about the angle of loll instead of the upright
6. Unstable ship may loll to either side
-condition described in the above objective is potentially
dangerous
