The document discusses 4 types of governments (democracy, monarchy, dictatorship, and communism), 3 types of economies (traditional, market, and command), and compares characteristics of developed, developing, and undeveloped countries. Democracies empower citizens through elections while dictatorships concentrate power in one ruler. Market economies rely on private ownership and competition compared to command economies where the government centrally plans the economy.

found in the World today. Democracy is a form of government in which the people elect leaders and rule by majority. In most democratic countries, citizens are free to choose representatives to make and enforce the law. This government works to protect the freedoms and rights of the people, such as freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Monarchy is one of the oldest types of government in the World. A monarchy is ruled directly by a king or queen, the head of a royal family. The people have little say in their government. England is an example of this. Dictatorship is a type of government in which a single, powerful ruler has total control. The leader is called a Dictator. They lead by force, and the people are not free. The people have few rights and no say in their own government. An Example of past Dictators are Adolf Hitler in Germany (1933-1945), Benito Mussolini in Italy (1925-1943). A political system in which the government owns all property and dominates all aspects of life in a country. Leaders are not elected by citizens, but instead chosen by the Communist Party or Communist Leaders. In most Communist States, like Cuba & North Korea, the government controls the countries economy and the daily life of the people. People have restricted rights & little freedom. Traditional Economy- a system in which people grow their own food and make their own goods. Trade may take place through barter, or exchange of goods without the use of money. Primitive economy. Market economy – is a system based on private ownership, free trade and competition Individuals are free to buy and sell what they wish. Prices are determined by the supply and demand for goods. The United States is one of many countries to use this system. A system in which the central government makes all economic decisions. This means, the government will decide what goods to produce, how much to produce, and what prices will be. While no country has a purely command economy, the economies of North Korea and Cuba are close to it. The Communist governments of these nations own and control most businesses. This is the value of all goods and services produced within a country in a single year. Also, called the GDP. The GDP allows us to compare incomes among countries. Others indicators include industrialization and overall quality of life. We examine types of technology, health care, and education a country has. Countries with Strong economies and a high quality of life. (An Example: US and Germany) Developed countries have a high GDP and high levels of industrialization. Their health care and education systems are among the best in the World. Many people have access to technology. These are countries with less productive economies and a lower quality of life. Almost 2/3 of the people in the World live in developing countries. Most of their citizens work in farming. They usually have no access to health care or technology. An example of these are Afghanistan or Guatemala. Which country has the highest GDP on this chart? Which country has the most TV per 1000 people? Which country has the largest Population? Which country would you expect to live the longest? What is the age? Why do you think this occurs? Justify your answers!
