An Introduction to Creative Writing
Creative Writing
O In the simplest terms creative writing is writing using
the imagination.
O It is mainly fictional and may take the form of
poetry, short story, novel, or play.
The Purposes of Creative Writing
O 1. To both entertain and share human experience, like
love or loss
O 2. To get at a truth about humanity through poetics
and storytelling
O 3. To express a feeling or a thought, the first step is
to use your imagination
Forms of Creative Writing
O Poetry is an expression of imaginative awareness of
experience through meaning, sound, and rhythmic
language; with the purpose of evoking emotional
response.
Forms of Creative Writing
O Short Stories and Novels are generally similar with
each other and considered to be included in the prose
genre. Though both forms are used to tell tales, their
main difference lies in the variations in length.
A short story can be read in just one sitting for a
short period of time. A novel requires more time to
be comprehended fully.
Forms of Creative Writing
O Dramas or plays actually appear to be similar to short
stories and novels, for they also tell stories about
characters that face conflicts which they have to
resolve within the story. However, dramas or plays
are intended to be performed in front of an audience
and presented on a stage.
Forms of Creative Writing
O Movie and television scripts. A screenplay, or script,
is a written work by screenwriters for a film,
television program, or video game. These
screenplays can be original works or adaptations
from existing pieces of writing. In them, the
movement, actions, expression and dialogues of the
characters are also narrated.
Forms of Creative Writing
O Song is a short piece of music, usually with words. It
combines melody and vocals, although some
composers have written instrumental pieces, or
musical works without words, that mimic the quality
of a singing voice. The words of a song are called
lyrics.
Forms of Creative Writing
O Speech is an art of conveying a message to your
audience. Either through oral communication or
through other means, such as power point slides,
speech writing has the same function as normal
writing. The reasons for writing are to inform, to
explain or to persuade.
Forms of Creative Writing
O Memoir is a historical account or biography written
from personal knowledge or special sources.
Forms of Creative Writing
O Personal Essay is a piece of writing that serves to
describe an important lesson gathered from a writer's
life experiences. The essay often describes a
significant event from a first-person perspective, and
can be done in various writing styles, like a formal
essay or as creative nonfiction.
