GREEK GODS AND GODDESSES
 Aphrodite was the goddess of love, eternal youth, beauty
and fertility. She represented sexual desire, which could be
pleasurable but also dangerous. She was also often
worshipped as protector of naval voyages.
Apollo
Apollo is a god said to be as complex and
mysterious as Zeus. He is the god of
reason and moderation, the giver of laws
and thus, the rewarder of right action and
the punisher of the wrong. He is, along
with his sister Artemis, a god of archery
and could send disease or cure to humans
with his arrow. He was the god of the sun
as Artemis is of the moon. He is also the
god of poetry and music, and, in what
perhaps his best known attribute, of
prophecy.
Ares
He is the son of Zeus and Hera and
is considered the god of war. He
represents the uncontrollable frenzy
of battle and all the destruction and
horrors of war. Due to his
uncontrollable rage, he is disliked by
most Greeks and some say, even by
his father, Zeus. Despite this, his
womanizing seems to have been
taken from his father. His most
famous affair was with Aphrodite,
the goddess of love. Their affair
produces four children despite its
secrecy. Their children are Eros,
Deimos, Phobus and Harmonia.
Artemis was a main goddess. She was the daughter of Zeus and Leto.
She represented virginity and chastity, along with more natural elements
like the environment, the hunt, and the moon. Artemis was a protector.
She protected wild and tame animals and all of nature.
Asclepius is the ancient
Greek god of medicine, who
is the son of Apollo .
Asclepius represents the
healing aspect of the medical
arts. He was also the
personification of the ideal
doctor, he was the god of
medicine and healing, while
also possessing the power to
raise people from the dea
Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, represents courage, civilization,
law, strength, the arts, and skill. Athena had a significant role in the
Greek mythology and in the lives of the Athenians and all Greeks.
Athena was the daughter of Zeus and Metis.
ROMAN GODS AND GODDESSES
Venus is the Roman goddess of love, beauty, prosperity,
fertility, and victory. She was so important to Romans that
they claimed her as their ancestress.
Apollo is the Roman god of the
sun, music, healing, archery
and prophecy. Apollo was
worshipped by many Romans
for his ability to cure diseases.
His association with healing
and medicine relates to the
control he was believed to have
over the plague. The Ancient
Romans believed that he could
bring both good health or bad
health including the deadly
plague.
Mars is the Roman god of war in
Roman mythology and the protector
of the ancient civilization. He was
also the Roman god of agriculture,
and then became the god of war.
The name Mars is derived from
Latin and may have been the name
used for an ancient child-god,
Maris. He was a powerful immortal
god known for this military might.
He was the son of Jupiter and Juno.
Diana began as a deity of the hunt
who later evolved into a lunar
goddess. Honored by the ancient
Romans, Diana was known as an
accomplished huntress, and stood as
a guardian of the forest and of the
animals who resided within. Despite
her virginal status, Diana later
became known as a protector of
women in childbirth, and other
vulnerable people.
Aesculapius the Roman god of healing and medicine. He was a the
son of the mortal woman Coronis and the god Apollo who, amongst
his other roles, was associated with medicine.
Minerva was the Goddess of
wisdom and crafts. This
Goddess represented the
application of intellect to
everyday tasks. As the
Goddess of wisdom she was
accredited with inventing
spinning, weaving, numbers
and music. Her attributes
were so numerous that Ovid
described her as the "Goddess
of a thousand works”. She is
also the patron of Goddess of
medicine. Her parents were
Jupiter and Métis.
