SOURCES OF TEMPTATION
AND THE TRADITIONAL FORMS
OF PENANCE
The 3 sources of temptation (cf 1 Jn 2:16) and how to combat them.

“lust of the eyes” “lust of the flesh” “pride of life”

 Almsgiving  Fasting  Prayer

(acts of charity in thoughts, words (spirit of mortification: (acts of charity in thoughts, words
and deeds) external and internal senses) and deeds)
Prayer, Mortification,
Acts of charity are inseparable

In a culture obsessed with efficiency in which “slower pace means

losses and speed is money,” Pope Francis recommended “wasting
time” with children and the elderly, noting that this is not a waste
but fundamental for society and strengthens the human family.

“I ask: Do you know how to waste time, or are you always in a

hurry? ‘No, I’m in a rush, I can’t…’ Do you know how to waste
time with grandparents, with the elderly? Do you know how to
spend time playing with your children,” Pope Francis asked.
