Modular Distance Learning In the

New Normal Education Amidst Covid-
19
II. Introduction

A. Background of the Study

The new normal education along with the different modalities faced different
disapprovals at first because of the risk but with the effort of education sectors in
the Philippines it is done systematically for the goal of continuing education
despite the pandemic.(personal knowledge only)

There are different safety measures being implemented by the IATF or the Inter-
Agency Task Force in order to prevent and mitigate the spread of Covid-19 while
the teaching and learning process continues in the country
to protect the teachers, parents and students health welfare. Some of the safety
protocols includes:proper sanitation of the schools where modular
learning is implemented by providing alcohol stands in every classroom for the
parents use, sanitizing footbath mats in every rooms doorsteps, wearing face
mask and face shield is a must for the teachers and parents
and social distancing is strictly executed. For the online learning and other
modalities where parents and their children stay at home as well as the
teachers, they are prescribed to do proper hand washing and regular sanitizing at
their homes.

B. Statement of the Problem
The disadvantages include greater self -discipline and self-motivation required for
students, increase preparation time and lack of concrete rewards for teachers and
staff, and greater administrative resources needed to track students and operate
multiple modules.

The key purpose of this research is to find out the challenges encountered by the
teachers, parents, and students in the implementation of Modular Distance Learning
in the Philippines public secondary schools. Also, this study aims to ascertain the
methods, Interventions or solutions of every educational institution as well as the
government in providing assistance to students, parents and teachers who are having
difficulty in this new learning modality.

C. Research Questions

• What are the challenges of Modular Distance Learning?

•How do you feel overall about distance education?

• How do teachers perform their roles in modular

distance learning?

• What are the effective ways cope with modular distance

learning?
D. Benefits and beneficiaries
1. Learning continues when the learner's adapt to change
There are more learner's who are learning even this type of academic set-up
wherein they are learning at home with the guidance and supervision of their
parents in their SLM or their self- learning modules. These learner's are open-
minded learner's and flexible with changes in their environment.

2. Parents realize their important role in their children's

education
Due to the covid-19 crisis going on in the country, parents now realized their role
in their children's learning and education.
They are now aware that teaching is not easy. There are parents who are also
adoptive to the present situation and don't blame teachers if these days, they are
their children's teachers at home.

3. Modular Distance Learning teach the learner's

values as well as the lessons
The learner's are learning not just specific lessons but also the values in this
time of pandemic. They learn how to manage their time because even if they
are at home, they have to strictly follow their schedule in answering the LAS
or learner's answer sheets based on their SLM or the self-learning
modules. They also develop a closer bond with their parents and guardians
while having teaching and learning process at home.
4. Teachers become open-minded with the challenges
brought by the pandemic
There are teachers who look at the pandemic as a challenge of educational
growth by means of making the (SLMs) self-learning modules, compiling
all the necessary lessons and objectives and competencies in a single
module for different subjects per quarter.

E. Definition of Terms
Modular Distance Learning features individualized instruction that allows
learner's to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format
( electronic copy, whichever is applicable to the learner.Learner's under
Modular Distance Learning can also use other resources such as Learner's
Materials, textbooks, activity sheets, study guides and other study materials.

Usually, teachers will have to deliver appropriate learning materials. However,

students can also access these materials by downloading electronic copies
through their computer, tablet PC, or smartphone.
