Background Information

on ISO/TS16949:2002
Introduction

 In 1995 - automotive manufacturers of the USA, UK, France,


Germany and Italy formed a task force to harmonise quality
system requirements

 July 1999 - the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) and


participating organisations launched the automotive certification
scheme:
 ISO/TS16949
 Rules for achieving IATF recognition applicable to certification and
accreditation bodies
 Third party auditor qualification requirements

 2002 - IATF with support from ISO/TC176 prepared


 ISO/TS16949:2002
 Rules for achieving IATF recognition applicable to certification
and accreditation bodies (1st edition for ISO/TS16949:2002)
 Third party auditor qualification requirements

 ISO/TS16949:2002 replaces ISO/TS16949:1999

 ISO/TS16949:2002 certifications will be accepted as the


international equivalent of QS-9000 (USA), AVSQ (Italy),
EAQF(French) and VDA 6.1(Germany)

Introduction

An ISO Technical Specification (ISO/TS) represents


an agreement between the members of a technical
committee and is accepted for publication if it is
approved by 2/3 of the members of the committee
casting a vote

The goal of this Technical Specification is the


development of fundamental quality systems that
provide for continuous improvement, emphasising
defect prevention and the reduction of variation and
waste in the supply chain

Definition of Terms
 ‘shall’ - mandatory requirement

 ‘should’ - indicates a recommendation

 ‘notes’ - for guidance in understanding/clarifying


the associated document

 ‘such as’ - suggestions given are for guidance only

Applicability

Applicable to production and service part supplier and


subcontractor “sites” providing:
 parts or materials, or
 heat treating, painting, plating or other finishing service
 other customer-specified products
 can also be applied throughout the automotive supply chain

“Remote locations” cannot obtain stand-alone certification
