INTRODUCTION
Global climate change and increase in the trend of greenhouse gas
emissions, as well as the depletion of conventional fuel reserves are a
growing concern over the years. The combustion of coal, oil and
natural gas emits more than 6 billion tones of CO2 annually.

Mitigation of CO2 by biological means has been gaining the

momentum because it leads to the generation of energy from biomass
grown by CO2 fixation through photosynthesis (Kondili and Kaldellis
2007). Photosynthetic CO2 fixation is thought to be a feasible
technology as it is energy efficient, sustainable and environmentally
benign.

BIOFUELS- GREEN ALTERNATIVE

Biofuels
ALGAL BASICS
 Microscopic, unicellular species and found in fresh water

and marine ecosystems.

 Capable of performing photosynthesis using the green
house gas CO2 and growing photoautotrophically.
 Produce almost half of the atmospheric oxygen.
 All the carbons fixed by a microalgal species are stored in
the cell as proteins, starch and lipids.
 Galdieria partita, Chlorella kessleri, Chlorellasp. T-1,
ChlorellaKR-1,

WHY
9 ALGAE?
 Higher microalgal productivity.
 Reduce the utilization of food-based
lignocellulosic biomass.
 Generating renewable fuel- satisfy the ever-
increasing energy demand.

Methods Advantages Challenges

•Low capital cost •Difficult to regulate chemistry

RACEWAY
•Evaporative cooling(outside) •Difficult to scale up
maintain temperature •High contamination

•Higher surface to volume ratio •Difficult to scale up

PHOTOBIOREACTORS •High maintenance cost
•Require periodic clearance and
temp maintenance
•Contamination

•Accomplished most effectively at •Large volume of air is required for

low Ph. small harvests
•Low capital cost
FROTH FLOATING
EXTRACTION PROCESS OF MICROALGAL LIPIDS (OIL)

Directly converting water from a frozen state to a

gaseous state without going through a liquid phase
Solvent
extraction

Disrupting algal cell-wall. Ultra

Release of soluble compounds and enhancing sonication
mass transfer - internalization of solvent into the
cells.

Super critical Rapid penetration of the fluid through cell matrix.

fluid Results in a higher total lipid yield with a shorter
extraction extraction time.
operate at low temperatures
CONVERSION OF MICROALGAL OIL INTO BIOFUEL

Transesterification:
•TAGs are stored in the specialized oil bodies in the cytosol of the cell. They
function as the energy reserve.

Ester( bioguel) ,
Triglyceride Diglyceride Monoglyceride
Glycerol

•It is also recently believed that enzyme catalyzed

transesterification reaction can increase the yield of biofuel. One
such enzyme is the lipase enzyme. The lipase enzyme is
obtained from Pseudomonas fluorescence, Candida rugosa,
Rhizopus oryzae and Candida antractica
ALGAE BIOFUEL PRODUCTION
PROCESS
14 CURRENT SCENARIO

 In 2010, India registered the highest change in biofuel

production.
 0.151 million tonnes of oil equivalent, India registered an
85% increase in production over its 2009 record.
 India hold 0.3% share of the global production.
 India’s biofuel demand at 0.5 billion gallons in 2009 which
will grow to 6.8 billion gallons by 2012.
 Demand of biofuel is five times higher than petrol.
 The government of India approved the “National Policy of
Biofuels” on Dec 24,2009. Since then, considerable
advancements have take place in the direction of cultivation,
production and use of biofuel.
SOCIAL
15 IMPACT & CONCLUSION

•Biofuel serve as a stimulus to rural

economics.
•Land assess and control
•Energy and Food security
•Employment

Currently, India’s position in global biofuel

map is not very prominent. However the
country has ambitious plans to extend the
biofuel sector.
