REACTORS

REACTORS:
A chemical reactor is an enclosed volume in which
a chemical reaction takes place. In chemical
engineering, it is generally understood to be a
process vessel used to carry out a chemical
reaction, which is one of the classic unit operations
in chemical process analysis.
Types of Reactors:

• Catalytic plate reactor

• Polymerization reactor
• Rotating fluidized bed reactor
•Catalytic plate reactor:
A catalytic plate reactor has metal plates with channels or grooves
appearing in a crisscross manner. These channels typically have a
height in millimeters and catalyst thickness measured in microns. The
grooves are coated with a suitable catalyst and can be arranged so
that exothermic and endothermic reactions take place in alternate
channels.
The heat transfer rates are very high through conduction.

•Polymerization Reactor:
• A variety of polymerization reactors, including continuous,
semibatch, and batch reactors, are used in industrial polymer
manufacturing.
• Rotation is used to enhance polymerization reactions. Other
polymerization reactor designs also include agitation without
rotation in order to enhance heat transfer into and out of the
reactants. Agitation/ rapid mixing is used in the continuous
polymerization. The use of an agitator is claimed to have a
significant positive effect upon mixing, reducing residue formation

• Rotating Fluidized Bed Reactor:
Fluidized bed reactors are chemical reactors in which catalytic
particles interact with a gas stream that is fed from the
bottom, such that the mixture emulsion phase behaves as a
fluid.
In a conventional fluidized-bed, the fluidization takes place
using a process gas stream but in the rotating fluidized bed
reactor(Torbed bed reactor), the angled slots through which
the gas passes impart a velocity component in a
circumferential direction, causing the particles to move around
the bed, as shown by arrows.
