Range of Difficulty (Difficulty Index)
To determine the difficulty level of test items, a measure called
the Difficulty Index is used. This measure asks teachers to calculate the
proportion of students who answered the test item accurately
Time Limit (Edulastic, 2019)
• 30 seconds per true-false item
• 60 seconds per multiple-choice item
• 120 seconds per short answer item
• 10-15 minutes per essay question
• 5 to 10 minutes to review the work
Arrangement of Items
Arranging Items in Test Guidelines
For instructional purposes, it is usually desirable to
group together items that measure the same outcomes
Where possible, all items of the same type should be
grouped together
Items should be arranged in terms of increasing
difficulty.
Directions should be simple and concise
