A. Definition Of Sentence

Sentence > is a group of words that


we use to communicate our ideas in
writing or speaking.
B. Kinds Of Sentence

01 Simple Sentence
Simple sentence is one independent clause
E. g : Rini plays a doll
• Rini = Subject
• Plays = Verb
02 Compound Sentence
Compound sentence is two or more
independent clause joined together - each
clause is of equal importance and could
stand alone.
E.g : i study math - my friends study english
03 Complex Sentence
Has one independent clause + one or more dependent clauses
Example: i took my umbrella because it was raining
 
There are 3 kinds of dependent complex sentences :
Noun clause : the function as a nouns
Example :
• That ayu like her new job is clear ( subject)
• i dont know what ayu likes (object)
 
Adjective clause: the function as a adjective
Example:- i like the novel which you recommended (object)
-The novel which you recommended was interesting (subject)
 
Adverb clause : the function as a adverb
Example : i will leave before she comes (adverb time)
04 Compound-Complex Sentence  
• Has two or more independent clauses + one or more
dependent clause.
 
• Compound- complex are the combination of a compound and
complex sentence.
 
Example: after the storm passed, i went outside, and i picked
the flowers.
C. Sentence Problems

01 Fragment
Every sentence in english needs a verb, a subject, and a
complete idea, so if we are missing one of those things we have a
sentence fragment.
Example:
-Was going to the store. This sentence is missing a subject.
-She an old women. This sentence missing berm is ‘be’.
-After we go to the store. This type of fragment because does not
express a complete idea.
02 Run-on and Comma Splices

a. Run-on
A run-on sentence occurs when two or more independent clauses
are connected improperly.
Example: I studied biology in college it was difficult.

We can fix them with:


-Make two sentences. ‘I studied biology in college. It was difficult’.
-Make a compound sentence. ‘I studied biology in college, and it was
difficult’.
-Use an infinitive like. ‘It was difficult for me to study biology in
college’.
b. Comma Splices
A comma splice is a type of error, and it’s a type of error where you join two
sentences just with a comma.
Example: The school installed a new sidewalk, the studens still walked on the
grass.

We can make:
-Use a period like ‘The school installed a new sidewalk. The students still
walked on the grass’.
-Add a conjunction like ‘The school installed a new slide, but the students still
walked on the grass’.
-Complex sentences like ‘After the school installed a new sidewalk, the
students still walked on the grass’.
03 Choppy
Choppy sentence is a sentence are too many short
simple sentences in a row and often repeat the same
words.

Example:
Choppy : I love her. She doesn’t love me. We can’t
love each other.
Revised : I love her, but she doesn’t love me, so we
can’t love each other.
04 Stringy
Stringy sentences are sentences with too many independent
clauses usually connected with and, but, so, and because,
forming one very long sentence.

Example:
Stringy : I try to teach my friend things and he keeps forgetting
and I feel bad because he’s always helping me.
Revised : I try to teach my friend things, and he keeps forgetting.
I feel bad because he’s always helping me.
