NAME THE COMPANY IN WHICH THE TRAGEDY TOOK PLACE?

• Union carbide is the company in which the Bhopal gas tragedy took
place. Union Carbide combined America's first commercial high-
carbon ferrochrome process, which had been developed by
company founder Major James T. Moorhead in the late 1890s, with a
metal alloying business acquired in 1906. warren martin Anderson
who was CEO of UC during the tragedy.
What is the reason for the accident?

• Initially water had begun to leak in E610 tank which contains 42


tonnes of Methyl isocyanate (MIC).
• Due to exothermic reaction of chemical the temperature of tank
increased to 200 degree celsius>.
• The emergency valve burst open and large quantity of MIC leaked into
atmosphere.
How the accident could have been prevented?

• There were three safety system in factory at the time.


• First : vent gas scrubber which was their primary instrument of
defence. The scrubber was suppose to spray caustic soda on leaking
MIC to neutralize it.
• Second: The flare tower which was suppose to burn the leaking MIC.
• Third: The spare tanks.

All the third defence sources were not in working condition. If these
security systems were working, this accident could have been
prevented.
Who all are the victims of the accident?
• The people of slums in and around of factory were affected the
most.
• The entire city is affected in the MIC GAS.
• The people around the factory only woke after they hearing children
coughing or found themselves choking, felt eye irritation and throat
burning.
• The alarms of factory begun ringing lately, the incident actually
started few hours before.
• Still, the people affected by MIC and their generations are having its
aftermath effects.
How do you think we can strengthen the safety
measures in factories?

• Inform Supervisors of Unsafe Conditions


• Use Equipment, Machines, and Tools Properly
•  Wear Safety Equipment (PPE)
•  Prevent Slips and Trips
• Keep Work Areas and Emergency Exits Clear
• Eliminate Fire Hazards
• Avoid Tracking Hazardous Materials
• Schedule and Perform Routine Inspections
• Meet Key Pipe Marking Requirements
• Provide Proper Training
