Introduction Meteorological Hazards and Disaster Risk Management What is your typical response when you hear a forecast about heavy rains?
A.Get annoyed because your laundry will not dry properly.
B.You love it because the petrichor and rain just makes you feel alive C.You instantly prepare an umbrella and check if this rain can cause flooding in your area. D.You check the overall weather outlook for the week to see any developing LPA. Whatever it is that you choose, it is apparent that a meteorological phenomena is a trigger for preparation. Learning about the weather is to… • Analyze the process and the dynamics of weather systems • Predict the future weather systems thru forecasting • Warn the general public of the hazards that it may cause Hydrometeorological hazards • Processes or phenomena of atmospheric, hydrological or oceanographic in nature. • may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damages, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruptions, or even environmental damages So in this course we will study the following:
• Preparedness (What to do before)
• Response (What to do during)
• Rehabilitation (What to do after)
Reactive VS Proactive response Responses on different hazardous weather is essential. There are two types of responses:
• REACTIVE: you solve matters as they arise
• PROACTIVE: you solve matters before they become an issue
Reactive examples: • Ginawang seat-work ang assignment • Gawin ang schoolwork 30 minutes before deadline.
