ALLEGY AND ALLERGENS

• Allergy is a condition in
which the immune system
reacts abnormally to a
foreign substance.
• The substances that causes
allergies are known as
Allergens.
Entry routes of allergens
Various kinds of allergens enter the body
through various routes such as:

• Skin: Allergic reaction occurs when

allergens such as latex or insect stings
come in contact with skin
• Mouth: Several types of foods are known
for allergic reactions, such as milk, egg,
soy, nuts, fish and, even milk protein.
• Nose: Tiny particles and gaseous allergens
invade the body through the nose, like
pollen, spores, dust and chemicals.
Types of allergies
1. Drug Allergy:- A drug allergy is the abnormal reaction of your immune system to a medication.
2. Mold Allergy:- A mold allergy is the abnormal reaction of your immune system to a mold or fungi.
3. Gluten Allergy:- Gluten allergy is an allergy that is caused when we get sickness due to eating gluten.
4. Food Allergy:- Food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs soon after eating a certain food.
5. Insect Allergy:- An allergic reaction to insects that don't sting or bite, like cockroaches or dust mites, is known as insect allergy.
6. Latex Allergy:-A latex allergy is an immune system reaction to proteins in natural rubber latex, a product made from rubber tree
fluids.
7. Pollen Allergy:-An abnormal reaction to pollens of any herbivores living being is known as pollen allergy.
8. Pet Allergy:- Pet allergy is an allergic reaction to proteins found in an animal's skin cells, saliva or urine.

Two ways to diagnose Allergies

1. Skin Prick Test (SPT)

Skin prick testing (SPT) is a
reliable method to diagnose IgE-
mediated allergic disease in
patients with rhinoconjunctivitis,
asthma, urticaria, anapylaxis,
atopic eczema and suspected
food and drug allergy.
2. Patch Test
A patch test is a diagnostic method used
to determine which specific substances
cause allergic inflammation of a
patient's skin. Patch testing helps
identify which substances may be
causing a delayed-type allergic reaction
in a patient and may identify allergens
not identified by blood testing or skin
prick testing.
