Handwashing script

Intro:
Promoting and maintaining our patients' health as well as preventing the spread of infections
are our duties as healthcare providers. Since hands are the main pathways of transmission,
then HANDWASHING is necessary.

 Now, I am going to demonstrate the proper steps of hand washing. All we need is soap
and warm running water. We also have here disposable paper towel or sanitized towel.
 Make sure your nails are kept short.
 Remove your jewelries.
 Check the hands for breaks in the skin, such as hangnails or cuts.
 If you are washing your hands where the clients can observe you can explain to the
client what you are going to do and why it is necessary.
 There are 5 types of faucet: hand operated, with knee levers, foot pedals, elbow
controls, and infrared control motion. Right now, I have a hand operated. If you are
wearing a lab gown you need to roll up your sleeves to your elbow but right now, I am
wearing a t-shirt size uniform so no need.
 Wet your hands with water by holding them under the running water.
 Apply enough soap to cover all the hands surfaces.
 Rub the hand palm to palm.
 Right palm over the left dorsal with the interlaced fingers and vice versa.
 Next step is palm to palm with fingers interlaced.
 Then back of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked.
 And then, rotational rubbing of left thumb plus right palm and vice versa.
 Rotational rubbing backwards and towards with clasp fingers of right hand in left palm
and vice versa
 The last one is rubbing from wrist to forearm and also on the other side.
 Rinse the hands thoroughly with water.
 If there is no more soap in your hand, dry the hand thoroughly using paper towels.
 The rationale for pat drying from hands to elbow is because the drying is from the
cleanest to the least clean part.
 Discard the paper towel in the appropriate container.
 To turn off the water, since this is hand operated, we can get another paper towel to
grasp the handle.
 Now, your hands are safe.

Once again, I am Johanna Kate W. Mahinay, your nursing student from 1-1.
Donning and removal of sterile gloves

Good Day! I am Johanna Kate W. Mahinay, your student nurse from 1-1 and today we are going to do
donning and removal of sterile gloves – open method.

 Sir, may I ask if you have any latex allergies? (while looking at the record)
 (clean table, sterile gloves)
 Check that the sterile glove package is dry and unopened. Also, note expiration date, making
sure that the date is still valid. Sterile gloves might already be opened and contaminated.
Checking if expiration date is still valid ensures sterility of the gloves.
 Place sterile glove package on clean, flat and dry surface at or above your waist. Moisture may
contaminate the sterile gloves. Any sterile items/package should be kept above waist level.
 Open the outside wrapper by carefully peeling the top layer back. Remove inner package,
handling only the outside of it. This will maintain the sterility of the gloves
