CHAPTER 1
AN
INTRODUCTION TO
2D ANIMATION

Animation
comes from the Latin words “anima,” which means
“life,” and “animare” which means “to breathe life
into” Animation consists of still images (called
“frames”) with slight differences between them.
When viewed together in a sequence, they give the
illusion of motion – like a flipbook.
how animation works the basics
2D drawn animation consists of a series of drawings shot
one after another and played back to give the illusion of
movement. This animation can be played back in a number of
ways.
● In the form of a ‘flipbook’ (basically a pile of drawings in
sequence, bound together and flipped with the thumb).
● The drawings could be shot on film one drawing at a time
with a movie camera and played back using a cinema
projector.
how animation works the basics
● They could be shot on a video camera and played back
with a video player.
● They could be shot with a video camera attached to a
computer and played back on the same computer using an
animation program.
● Or they can be scanned into the computer and played
back.
frames per second
Animation shot on film and projected is played at 24
frames per second.
what you need for your studio
● animation paper
● peg bar
● light box
● x-sheets
● line tester
● pencils
Animation paper
A high-quality , semi-opaque , 17 lb paper with good formation,
12f Finch Animation Paper erases easily without smearing or
smudging. ... Choose punched or unpunched paper.
peg bar
So a peg bar is a piece of plastic, or if you get fancy a piece of metal,
that is meant to hold your papers in place when you draw and shoot
your animation. ... You punch your paper and stick it onto the peg
bar as you draw.
Light box
Lightboxes are used for illuminating graphic displays, and
are created using an outer frame, a graphic - usually fabric or
duratrans which are designed to permeate light, and LED
lighting - housed within the frame or back panel which
illuminates the installed graphic.
x-sheets
An exposure sheet (also referred to as camera instruction
sheet, dope sheet or X-sheet) is a traditional animation tool
that allows an animator to organize their thinking and
give instructions to the camera operator on how the
animation is to be shot
Line-tester
A Line Test is a process used to check hand drawn
frames prior to them being used for final artwork. Frames
are captured either via a video camera, frame by frame or
by scanning them into a computer. The resulting sequence
allows the animator to assess how well the sequence is
flowing.
pencils
an instrument for writing or drawing, consisting of a thin
stick of graphite or a similar substance enclosed in a long
thin piece of wood or fixed in a metal or plastic case.
one-point perspective
A one-point perspective drawing means that the drawing
has a single vanishing point, usually (though not
necessarily) directly opposite the viewer's eye and usually
(though not necessarily) on the horizon line. All lines
parallel with the viewer's line of sight recede to the
horizon towards this vanishing point.
Two point perspective drawing
With two point perspective, two vanishing points are
placed on the horizon line. ... This line is drawn in between
the two vanishing points and can cross over the horizon line.
Receding lines are next drawn from each end of the corner
to each one of the vanishing points. These lines are called
orthogonal lines.
