Title: Body Area Network

Introduction:
• The Body Area Network is a network of sensor nodes attached to the
human body that are used to serve a variety of applications including
medical (heart rate, blood pressure, brain signals etc.), consumer
electronics and personal entertainment.
• It is also referred to as a Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) or a
Body Sensor Network (BSN).
• Body Area Network (BAN) technology uses small, low power devices
and devices with low latency.
Communicatio
n Types:
The communication in
body area network is of 2
types:
In-body communication
On-body communication
BAN Architecture:
The BAN/WBAN system is divided into three levels:
• The lowest level contains several number of cheap and low-power
sensor nodes. These can only communicate with the parent device.
• The second level is the personal server (Internet enabled device, cell-
phone, or home computer). These are full function devices.
• The third level encompasses a network of remote server which is the
remote application to which data or information is transferred.
Body Area Network
Applications:
1. Medical Applications:
• Remote healthcare monitoring – Sensors are put on patient’s body to
monitor heart rate, blood pressure, SPO2 and ECG.
• Telemedicine – Provides healthcare services over a long distance with
the help of IT and communication.
2. Non-medical Applications:
• Sports – Sensors can be used to measure navigation, timer, distance,
pulse rate, and body temperature.
• Lifestyle and entertainment – Wireless music player and making video
calls.
