Monkey’s Paw

WW. Jacobs

Dhanush

THEME
 Unchecked greed only leads to unhappiness, no matter how much
more one asks for. Intense desire also often leads to unfulfilled
expectations or unintended consequences as with Herbert’s
unexpected death and rise from the grave as a living corpse. Put
simply, Jacobs is reminding readers to be careful what they wish
for because it may just come true.
 The monkey’s paw is a symbol of desire and greed—everything
that its owner could possibly wish for and the unrestricted ability
to make it happen. This power makes the paw alluring, even to
unselfish people who desire nothing and have everything they
need.

 Mrs. White
 Herbert White
 Sergeant-Major Morris
That night was cold and wet, Father and son were playing chess

tall, heavy built, strong-looking  man came
Sergeant-Major Morris
spoke of wild scenes and brave acts; of wars and strange peoples.
He took something out of his pocket and held it out for them. Mrs. White drew back with a look of  disgust,
but her son, taking it, examined it curiously.
“THE MONKEY’S PAW”
It had a spell put on it by an old fakir
It will fulfil the three wishes of a man
But I had enough of it said morris and
He threw it in the fire
But he refused to burn ant kept that with him
The sergeant warned him the consequences but he never want to listen
“Hold it up in your right hand, and state your wish out loud so that you
can be heard,
After Supper the sergeant went
Did you give anything for it, father?” asked Mrs. White
“I wish for two hundred pounds” said the old man
“It moved,” he cried, “As I wished, it  twisted in my hand like a snake.”
The Very Next Day
Herbert Left for his Job
an employee arrives at the Whites' home, telling them that Herbert had
been killed in a terrible machine accident that mutilated his body.
Mrs White Shattered
The company denies any responsibility for the incident,  but makes a
goodwill payment of £200, the amount that Mr. White had wished for.
A week after the funeral, Mrs. White, mad with grief,
insists that her husband use the paw to wish Herbert back to life.
Reluctantly, he does so
Despite great unease at the thought of summoning his son's mutilated and
decomposing body
An hour or so later, there is a knock at the door
As Mrs. White fumbles at the locks in a desperate attempt to open the
door
He searched for the monkey’s paw and wished his last wish
 The knocking stops
Mrs. White opens the door to find that no one is there.
