WELDED
CONNECTION
Example No. 1

The welded bracket connection is subjected to an eccentric load of
45kN acting as shown in figure. An E70 fillet weld is used with a
minimum tensile strength Fb= 485MPa.

a. Compute the centroid of the fillet welds measured from BC

b. Compute the moment of inertia at the centroid group of fillet welds.
c. Compute the appropriate size of the fillet welds to be used.
Most stressed welds
Example No. 2

A double angle tension member (2<’s 89x76x9.5) with long leg back to back,
Ag= 2953mm2 is welded to a 9.5mm2 thick gusset plate. All structural steel is
A36 with Fy = 248MPa, Fu = 400MPa. Assume all the welds are adequate and
don’t control the tensile capacity.
L1= 76mm and L2 = 152 mm

allowable stress according to NSCP
Tension on Gross Area,Ft = 0.6 Fy
Tension on Net Area,Ft = 0.50 Fu
Fv = 0.30Fu

a. Tensile load based on Gross Area using a strength reduction coefficient of
85%
b. Tensile load based on Effective Net area using a strength reduction
coefficient of 85%
c. Tensile load based on block shear in the gusset plate along the perimeter
of the welds
Solution:
a) Tgross= 0.60 FyAg
Tgross= 0.60(248)(2953)
Tgross= 439.406 kN

b) Tnet = 0.50 FuAe
Tnet = 0.50 (400)(0.85)(2953)
Tnet = 502.010 kN

c) TBS = 0.50 FuAe + 0.3 FuAv
TBS = 0.50 (400)(89)(79)+ 0.3(400)(76+152)
(7.9)
TBS = 356.764 kN
