Role of the address field in a packet

travelling through a Virtual Circuit

Network and a Datagram Network
ADDRESS FIELD

● The portion of a message that contains the source user

address and destination user address is called address field.
● In a communication network, address field is usually
contained within the message header portion of the
message.
● It houses the register address and memory address.
VIRTUAL CIRCUIT NETWORK
● Virtual circuit switching is done at the network layer of the
communication system.

● The path between the source and the destination nodes that is followed
by first data packet gets allocated. All other data packets transmitted
between them will use the same path.
VIRTUAL CIRCUIT NETWORK
DATAGRAM NETWORK
● Datagrams are data packets which contain adequate header information
so that they can be individually routed by all intermediate network
switching devices to the destination.

● In a datagram network, each time an end system wants to send a packet,

it stamps the packet with the address of the destination end system and
then pops the packet into the network.
DATAGRAM NETWORK
ROLE OF ADDRESSING FIELD IN CASE OF
VIRTUAL CIRCUIT NETWORK

● The address field defines the virtual circuit number (local)

addressing.
● The addresses are used by routers between source and
destination IP address to determine a path through the
network for packet.
ROLE OF ADDRESSING FIELD IN CASE OF
DATAGRAM NETWORK

● The address field defines the end to end (source to

destination) addressing.
● Source is the IP address the packets coming from and
destination is the IP address they are going to
CONCLUSION

Addressing fields holds an important place in computer networks. A

packet is transmitted as soon as it is available in a node, based upon its
header information. The packets of a message are not routed via the
same path. So, the packets in the message arrives in the destination
out of order. It is the responsibility of the destination to reorder the
packets in order to retrieve the original message.
