Definition, Types, Examples, and Functions of
Adverbs

Adverbs, or word ketengan in Indonesian, is a


very important part of speech. Because adverbs
provide additional information on the adjective
and adverb itself. In addition, verbs can also
explain verbs and even sentences. The following
will explain the meaning, types, examples, and
functions of adverbs.

1. Adverb of Place and Direction


Adverb of place and direction is an adverb that expresses
the place and direction (where something is done or is).
Form: word: here, there, outside, inside, home, west,

2. Adverb of Manner
Adverb of manner is an adverb that shows the way (how
something is done).

intensity (how strong, weak, often, big, etc. something is).

5. Adverb of Frequency
Adverb of frequency is an adverb that expresses frequency
(how often an activity is done or something happens).
Member: always, usually, normally, often, sometimes,
occasionally, seldom, rarely, never.
Example: He usually comes late, Tom seldom plays with us, I ever
called him.
6. Exclamatory Adverb
An exclamatory adverb is an adverb that is used to
exclaim. Pattern: How + adjective/ adverb + S V!
Example:
You are funny = How funny you are!
He becomes angry = How angry he becomes!
She danced beautifully = How beautifully she danced!
The man behaves badly = How badly the man behaves!
7. Explanatory Adverb
Explanatory adverb is an adverb that is used to explain
something similar or to detail something.
Examople: e.g. (exempli gratia), for example, for instance
like: such as, like, as namely, namely: i.e. (id est), viz. (videolicet),
namely Example: There are many interesting places to visit in the
city, e.g., the botanical garden and the art museum.
I prefer to wear casual clothes, such as jeans and a sweatshirt.

9. Sentence Adverb
Sentence adverb is an adverb that serves to explain the whole
sentence.

 Adverb position
