Practicing Body Mechanics
1. Asses object to be moved
2. Obtain help if needed
3. Wash hands
4. Keep feet apart
5. Bend at knees hold close to body
6. Lift the load with leg muscles while
keeping abdominal muscles tight and
spine straight

Bed Making
Types of Bed
1. Unoccupied bed/closed bed – is covered
from bottom to top
2. Occupied bed – bed which is made with
the client in it
3. Open bed – bed with the top sheet fan
folded, ready for a newly admitted client
• Surgical bed – made to client after

Open Bed
Purposes of Bed making
1. To promote comfort
2. To provide clean, neat environment
3. To provide a smooth, wrinkle free bed
foundation

Assessment
 Client health status
 Clients BP, pulse and respirations if
indicated
 Client may experience postural hypotension

Special considerations in bed
making
1. Practice good body mechanics
2. Strip one bed linen/sheet at a time
3. Finish one side of the bed at a time
4. Avoid overreaching. It is cause muscle pain
5. Avoid of fanning of soiled linens. May cause
contamination of the environment
6. Confine surface of bed linen that has been
in direct contact with the patient

7. Place soiled linen in a pillow case. To be
discarded into a linen hamper
8. Keep soiled linen away from the uniform
9. Apply bed sheets in the following order
Bottom sheet
Rubber sheet
Draw sheet
Top sheet and blanket(optional)
Pillow case

Equipment's
1. Clean gloves if needed
2. 2 flat sheets (1 fitted and 1 flat sheet)
3. Cloth draw sheet
4. One bed spread
5. Pillow case

Procedure – Unoccupied bed
1. Explain procedure to the
client
2. Don clean gloves
3. Position the bed flat, side
rails down and at waist
level
4. Remove blanket if clean
fold and reuse.

5. Remove soiled linens
towards the middle of
the bed and place in
the linen bag or
hamper, keeping
soiled linens away
from uniform

7. Clean the mattress if needed
8. Remove gloves , wash hands and
don clean gloves
9. Apply the bottom sheet
a. fitted sheet –place the seam side
down and apply to the top of the
bed then the bottom

b. Flat regular sheet- the sheet should
hang 10 inches over the mattress on
the side and at the top of the bed.
Center the sheet on the bed and tuck
the top and miter corner closest to you
at the head of the bed

10. Place the draw sheet on the bed with
the middle crease centered on the
middle of the bed
11.Tuck the flat sheet and draw sheet on
the side closest to you
12.Tuck the sheets on the opposite side
13. Apply the top sheet with the seam side
up and the center crease in the middle
of the bed

14. Apply the blanket over the top sheet
15. tuck the sheet and the blanket at the
bottom of the bed and miter the corner
16. Fold the top sheet blanket over 6 inches
at the head of the bed and fan-fold
17. Apply clean pillow cases by grasping the
closed end turning the pillow case inside
out over the pillow

18. Return the bed to its lowest position
19. Determined the client’s need to
return to bed and assist as needed
20. Remove gloves and wash hands
21. Evaluate the need for additional linen
changes during client care

Occupied Bed
1. Don gloves
2. Remove the top sheet and
blanket, loosen the bottom
sheet, and lower the side
rail closest to you
3. Cover the client with a bath
blanket

4. Position the client on the
side facing away from
you and reposition the
pillow under the client’s
head
5. Roll the bottom linens
toward the center of the
bed

6. Place clean bottom
linens with the center
fold nearest the client
and tuck under the
soiled linens

9. Tuck the draw sheet under the mattress
10. Logroll the client to the side nearest you
and raise the side rail
11. Move to the other side of the bed and
remove the soiled linens

12. Unfold /unroll the
bottom sheet, draw sheet
and pull tightly to tuck
under the mattress, miter
the corners
13. Place the top sheet and
blanket over the client
with the center in the
middle unfold then
remove the bath blanket

14. Raise foot of mattress and
tuck the sheet and blanket
under miter the corners
15. Loosen the sheet and
blanket at toes
16. Instruct the client to rest
his or her head on the bed
and removed the soiled
pillowcase . Apply a clean
one
