Introduction to Inverting Op-amp
• An inverting amplifier (also known as an inverting operational
amplifier or an inverting op-amp) is a type of operational amplifier
circuit which produces an output which is out of phase with respect
to its input by 180o.
• This means that if the input pulse is positive, then the output pulse
will be negative and vice versa.
• The op amp inverting amplifier circuit is very easy to design and can
be implemented with a very limited number of additional electronic
components.

6
Construction of Inverting Op-amp
• In this Inverting Amplifier circuit
the operational amplifier is
connected with feedback to
produce a closed loop operation.
• When dealing with operational
amplifiers there are two very
important rules to remember
about inverting amplifiers, these
are: “No current flows into the
Fig.1 inverting op-amp
input terminal” and that “V1
always equals V2” https://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/opamp/opamp
_2.html

7
Construction of Inverting Op-amp
• This is because the junction of the input and feedback signal ( X ) is at
the same potential as the positive ( + ) input which is at zero volts or
ground then, the junction is a “Virtual Earth”.
• Because of this virtual earth node the input resistance of the amplifier is
equal to the value of the input resistor, Rin and the closed loop gain of
the inverting amplifier can be set by the ratio of the two external
resistors.
• there are two very important rules to remember about Inverting
Amplifiers or any operational amplifier for that matter and these are.
No Current Flows into the Input Terminals
The Differential Input Voltage is Zero as V1 = V2 = 0 (Virtual Earth)
8
Working of Inverting Op-amp
• Assuming the opamp is ideal and
applying the concept of virtual short at
the input terminals of opamp, the
voltage at the inverting terminal is
equal to non inverting terminal.
• Applying KCL at inverting node we get
(0-Vi)/Ri+(0-Vo)/Rf = 0
• By rearranging the terms we will get Fig.2 working of inverting op-amp

Voltage gain Av = Vo/ Vi = – Rf/Ri  ifier-circuit-working-and-applications/#:~:text=In
verting%20Amplifier%20as%20Op-Amp

9
Working of Inverting Op-amp
• Gain of inverting amplifier Av= – Rf/Ri.
• This indicates that the voltage gain of
the inverting amplifier is decided by
the ratio of the feedback resistor to
the input resistor with the minus sign
indicating the phase-reversal.
• Further, it is to be noted that the input
impedance of the inverting amplifier is Fig.3 waveform of inverting op-amp
nothing but Ri. https://www.circuitstoday.com/inverting-amplifi

10
Advantages of Inverting Amplifier
• It follows the negative feedback.
• The gain factor of these amplifiers is very high.
• The output generated will be out of phase with the applied input signal.
• The potential values at both the inverting and the non-inverting
terminals maintained at zero.

11
Disadvantages of Inverting Amplifier
• The gain is high but the feedback that is followed must be maintained
to be distortion less.
• The applied input signal should not contain the noise because small
value applied will be multiplied and obtained at the output.

12
Applications of Inverting Amplifier
• As the output generated is of the 180-degree phase shift. It can
be used as a phase shifter.
• It can be practically used in the applications of the integration.
• At the applications where the signal must be balanced inverting
amplifiers are utilized.
• In the concept of mixers when the radio frequency signals are
present these amplifiers are used.

13
Introduction to Non-inverting Op-amp
• Non Inverting amplifier is one in which the output is in phase with
respect to input(i.e. if you apply a positive voltage, output will be
positive ).
• Output is an Non inverted(in terms of phase) amplified version of
input.
• A non-inverting amplifier is an op-amp circuit configuration which
produces an amplified output signal.
• This output signal of non-inverting op amp is in-phase with the input
signal applied. In other words a non-inverting amplifier behaves like a
voltage follower circuit.

14
Construction of Non-inverting Op-amp
• A non inverting operational
amplifier or non inverting op amp
uses opamp as main element.
It has two input terminals (pins).
• One is inverting denoted with
minus sign (-), and other is non-
inverting denoted with a positive
sign (+).

ng-and-non-inverting-amplifiers/#:~:text=Non-Inverting%20
Amplifier

15
Construction of Non-inverting Op-amp
• In non-inverting amplifier, the inverting input terminal is grounded.
• When we apply any signal to the non – inverting input of, it does not
change its polarity when it gets amplified at the output terminal.
• So in that case the gain of the amplifier is always positive.
• In non-inverting amplifier it amplifies the input signal which is
applies at positive terminals.

16
Working of Non-inverting Op-amp
• Assuming the opamp is ideal and
applying the concept of virtual short,
the voltage at the inverting terminal is
equal to non inverting terminal.
• Applying KCL at inverting node we get
              (Vi-Vo)/R2+(Vo-0)/R1 = 0
• By rearranging the terms we will get
Voltage gain Av = Vo/ Vi = (1+ R1/R2) Fig.5 working of inverting op-amp

17
Working of Non-inverting Op-amp
• As gain is
A =1+R1/R2
• Hence the output voltage is in same
phase with input voltage.
• The waveform is showing the function
of both input voltage and output
voltage.

18
Advantages of Non-inverting Amplifier
• The output signal is obtained without phase inversion.
• In comparison to the impedance value of the input at the inverting
amplifier is high in the non-inverting amplifier.
• The voltage gain in this amplifier is variable.
• Better matching of impedance can be obtained with the non-inverting
amplifiers.

19
Disadvantages of Non-inverting Amplifier
• More stages are utilized based on the requirement of achieving desired
gain.
• Based on the respective amplifiers chosen the input and the output
resistance gets varied.

20
Applications of Non-inverting Op-amp
• The circuits that have the requirement of the high input impedance
non-inverting amplifiers are utilized.
• To isolate the respective cascaded circuits these are used.
• In the varying gains consideration, these amplifiers are used.
