INTRODUCTION

• Eating disorder disproportionately affected women and are particularly


challenging given their association with a variety of physical and psychiatric
comorbidities that vary by eating disorder presentation. Over the past 20
years, research on eating disorders has increased exponentially, with
considerable focus on treatment and prevention. Eating disorders affect 5 to
10 million females and 1 million males in the united states. Regardless of
specific diagnosis, age or onset, or duration of illness, all eating disorders
can be fatal and most are associated with changes in affect, self esteem,
energy, judgement, concentration, and social function.
• The mechanisms underlying eating disorders involves a complex interplay of
genetic and environmental factors. This chapter reviews the epidemiology,
pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of anorexia nervosa, bulimia
nervosa and common, nonspecific eating disorders of adolescence.
(Ebrahimi et al, 2010), out come of eating disorder.
TYPES OF EATING DISORDER AMONG YOUTHS
The types of eating disorders are;
• Anorexia nervosa
• Bulimia nervosa
• Binge eating disorder
Other specified feeding and eating disorder
• Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder
• Pica
• Rumination disorder
Causes of eating disorder among youths
There are many genetic, environmental and sociological factors that
contribute to eating disorder development;
• Biological factor
• Psychological facts
• Environmental factors
Effects of eating disorder among youths
• Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and other types of eating disorders
can have an incredibly negative impact on mental health. Eating
disorder symptoms and behaviors can reinforce disordered thought
patterns, leading to the constant degradation of self- esteem levels
may plummet as the disordered thought patterns and compulsive
behaviors serve to reinforce each other furthermore, the disordered
thoughts urges, and behaviors caused by eating disorders can lead to
depression and anxiety.
SOLUTIONS OF EATING DISORDER AMONG YOUTH

Eating disorders are dangerous for both


physical and mental health.
•Awareness of knowledge
•Encourage excellent and healthy eating
•Start the eating disorder treatment
conversation
Prevention of eating disorder among
youths
• Set a good example by eating well.
• Avoid making negative or shaming comments about food and eating
• Keep healthy foods around the house:
• Encourage your loved one to eat when they are hungry
• Educate yourself and your family about how diet can affect your
health
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
CONCLUSION
• The knowledge based on eating disorders in children and adolescents
continues to increase with contributions from epidemiological and
clinical studies, and across divergent domains from applied science to
intervention research. There has been recent clarification of factors in
a broad ecological models and parent factors. There have
developments in understanding pathways to eating disorders and
progress following diagnosis and treatment.
RECOMMENDATIONS
It is therefore recommended that;
• Emergency funding should be provided to rapidly meet the urgent needs of eating
disorder patients and services as a direct result of an increase in the number and
severity of eating disorder presentations related to the Covid. 19 Pendemic.
• A national eating disorder network should be established and funded by Scottish
government. Nigeria government should provide funding to the third sector to
build phat forms and arrange of community services to enable the Scottish public
to have free access to avoidance based self help, management programmes and
supports, including peer support network.
• Medical aspects of care should be prioritized, with clear lines of responsibility and
leadership from suitably trained medical experts.
• Families and cares should be given a high level of support from the start of their
loved ones eating disorder, and for as long as they need it.
